Winter Leagues: Flores coming on strong in Venezuela

Here is a quick round-up of performances by Mets prospects in the Caribbean Winter Leagues:

  • After a slow start, Wilmer Flores has gotten red hot at the plate, carrying a nine-game hitting streak into today’s action. He is hitting .436 with 17 hits, one home run and three RBI in his last 10 games in the Venezuelan Winter League. He’s raised his average from .188 on November 25 to .289.
  • In the Dominican Winter League, Fernando Martinez is hitting just .077 (2-for-26) with one RBI in nine games this winter. He hasn’t played since December 8.
  • Jeurys Familia made his second appearance and first since October 15 for Los Gigantes del Cibao last night and struck out the side in one inning of relief.
  • Jordany Valdespin has gotten his bat going for Los Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Republic, posting a .323 average with two doubles over his last ten games. He’s hit .255 with three doubles, three triples and 12 RBI in 31 games this winter.
