In a report to the New York Post Dan Martin says, “It doesn’t appear there is going to be room in the Mets’ retooled bullpen for Jason Isringhausen.”
“There probably isn’t a fit for him here,” one source told Martin. “He’s been talking to other teams, and we think he’ll wind up elsewhere.”
Izzy, 39, appeared in 53 games for the Mets this year before having his season cut short with a herniated disk in his back. Izzy was 3-3 with a 4.05 earned run average and seven saves, including his 300th.
Matthew Cerrone: I figured he would not be back, considering how close he was to retirement one year ago, and since he missed the final month of last year with numbness in his leg due to a herniated disc. The crazy thing is, he was probably the team’s most consistent reliever last year. It wasn’t pretty, but his breaking ball still sits in stark contrast to his fastball (as slow as it all may be) and it works for him. I’ve heard there are a handful of teams who are interested in having him compete for a spot in spring training. If this is the case, assuming each team offers roughly the same minor-league deal, I have to think he’ll go where he has the best chance to pitch and win. Returning to the Mets would get him opportunities and put him back in a mentor role, which I understand he enjoyed a lot last year.
