Mets still looking for left-handed bat

The Mets are still interested in a left-handed hitting outfielder, CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman said last night on Twitter.

According to Heyman, at present, “the team appears to be trying to scrounge up the money.”

Last week, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN also said on Twitter that the Mets were “diligently monitoring” the left-handed hitting outfield market, as well.

“The team is shopping in the aisle that includes Rick AnkielKosuke FukudomeRaul Ibanez and Johnny Damon,” Andy Martino of the Daily News later reported.

Matthew Cerrone: In talking to people close to the team, I actually don’t think the Mets are being so specific about the outfield part of this, so much as they’re looking for a left-handed bat for the bench. I think they’d sign a middle infielder, if it meant the right guy. I am pretty certain they were interested in Carlos Guillen, who just signed a $1 million minor-league deal with the Mariners. In Guillen’s case, I heard the Mets were discussing with him a similar contract, but he felt he had a better shot of cracking the 25-man roster in Seattle. He’s probably right.

So, my educated guess here is that Sandy Alderson is simply dangling that $1 million, minor-league deal on a line, and whomever latches on he will reel in. This is probably why so many people keep connecting them to Ankiel, as Damon and Ibanez keep looking for teams in the American League.
