SI.com’s Jon Heyman is co-hosting WFAN’s mid-day show this afternoon.

To listen to WFAN live, online, click here.

According to Heyman, the Mets had a meeting yesterday to discuss their prospects, and seem to have no interest in trading Jenrry Mejia, Brad Holt, Fernando Martinez and Ike Davis.

Heyman says a deal for Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay will certainly cost some combination of Holt, Mejia, Davis or Martinez, and so a deal with the Mets is not likely to happen.

What’s more, Heyman says the Mets have struggled to match up with Billy Beane and the A’s, regarding OF Matt Holliday; they’ve checked in on Aubrey Huff, but the Mets see him most as a DH, much like they view Nationals OF Adam Dunn; and so, in the end, he does not see any imminent trades for the Mets.

However, Heyman said the Phillies do have the necessary talent to acquire Halladay, who they are very much interested in, as do the Giants, and possibly the Cardinals and Dodgers.

In a report full of news, notes and rumors from around MLB, Jon Heyman of SI.com says rival General Managers are saying Omar Minaya is looking to upgrade his team’s offense, ‘now.’

Heyman believes the Mets are most interested in finding a player who can play both first base and outfield, so he can shift to left field when Carlos Delgado returns from the disabled list.

Heyman suggests Rockies OF Brad Hawpe, Nationals OF Adam Dunn, O’s 1B Aubrey Huff and Indians infielder Mark DeRosa.

According to Buster Olney, in a post to his blog for ESPN.com, the Mets can add roughly $5 million to their payroll.

…the answer is dunn…

…i tried to deny it, but, it’s starting to become pretty clear…

…he solves their biggest problem, which is power and instant offense… and the thing is, he’s guaranteed to do so… i mean, that’s what he does… he hits monster home runs… a guy like derosa or huff, who knows how they’ll translate in Citi Field… maybe they’ll just have warning track power, like every one else… dunn, however, will ‘take it to the bridge,’ like James Brown used to say…

In fact, as SNY.TV’s Ted Berg pointed out to me in an e-mail, according to Hit Tracker Online, Dunn led the league last season in No Doubt Home Runs, which is a home run that cleared the fence by at least 20 vertical feet AND landed at least 50 feet past the fence.

Dunn was second in No Doubt Home Runs during 2007, and again led the league in 2006.

…bingo, ted… dunn solves the problem…

… sure he k’s, but the team as whole moves the line enough that they can live with it… plus, when he isn’t striking out or hitting a 500–foot home run, he’s walking…

…his defense is a liability… he makes Daniel Murphy look like a Gold Glove winner… in left and at first… but, you take the good with the bad, i guess, and it’s hard to deny what he’d bring to the lineup in terms of pop and weight and added stability…

However, yesterday, also on ESPN.com, Jayson Stark said the Nationals are asking for an ‘astronomical price,’ for Dunn.

…frankly, i get zero sense the Nationals even plan to trade dunn, which is probably why the price is so high… i mean, he gives them some credibility, he’s entertaining because of his mammoth home runs, and he’ll earn $10 million next season… and so, i’ve been hearing the Nationals will even pick up part of the tab on dunn, but in return they’d want a guy like Bobby Parnell, plus a position prospect… to me, this seems like a lot to give up…

For more, check out Ben Shpigel in the New York Times, where he points out just how weak the Mets have been at first base since Delgado’s surgery.

Yesterday, Jerry Manuel explained to reporters that his team needs to find more power from its offense, with or without Carlos Delgado.

According to the Star-Ledger, “The Mets have hit only 34 homers through their first 55 games, ranking 28th out of 30 teams in the majors.”

…on one hand, i think, who cares… if the team is scoring, why does it matter how they score… on the other hand, let’s say there are two outs and a runner on second and the team is down two runs… it sure is easier to tie the score on one swing, than it is to get three doubles in a row before getting one out… also, a lack of power makes it difficult to score late and in bunches, especially when playing from behind… so, while i cant to think power is overrated, it is important, though it’s not the only way to score runs…

…that said, i actually like the way David Wright and Carlos Beltran are hitting, playing a more well-rounded, offensive game… so, that means the power should probably come from a trade, or two…

Saturday on WFAN, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said Omar Minaya is most focused on acquiring a corner outfielder.

…the popular name on talk radio seems to be OF Adam Dunn…

…however, from what i recall from the off season, the Mets have never been intrigued with dunn… also, did you watch dunn play defense this past weekend… wow, he makes Daniel Murphy look like a Gold Glove winner… and, the Mets are putting extra emphasis on defense and base running these days, considering Citi Field… i go back and forth on dunn, personally… i like that he can play first base, than shift to left field if delgado returns… but, i worry about his defense, base running and strike outs, especially in this specific lineup, even though i know Citi Field will not contain his home runs…

Lastly, Heyman pointed out that the Red Sox are also looking to acquire a bat, and would likely put together a better package than Minaya.

…sure, but they can’t acquire them all…

…actually, i sense this will be a buyer’s market, because a) out-of-contention teams will be looking to cut payroll, and save cash in this economy, by moving contracts, and b) not every contending team will want to add salary, again because of the economy, meaning there could be far more sellers than buyers…

Tom Verducci of SI.com says Adam Dunn signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Nationals.

…good for dunn… i didn’t think he would get that much in this market…

…by the way, with dunn in DC and Bobby Abreu with the Angels, i assume this means Manny Ramirez will soon be signing with the Dodgers…

Original Post, 3:04 pm:

According to the Washington Post, the Nationals and free-agent OF Adam Dunn have reached agreement on a two-year deal.

…jeez, Jim Bowden, why not just sign Ken Griffey Jr., and get it over with, since you are boxing yourself in to the exact same problem that did you in while the GM of the Reds… outfielders, outfielders, get your red hot outfielders… as our intern just said, ‘Does he know there are only three outfield spots.’… the crazy thing is, dunn and kearns were the same two guys he was constantly trying to move while in Cincinnati…

Dunn will join Elijah Dukes, Willie Harris, Austin Kearns, Lastings Milledge, Josh Willingham and Wily Mo Pena in the team’s outfield.

…so, i’m thinking dunn will play first, i guess…

MLB.com is reporting the same information, adding, “Terms of the deal were not disclosed.”

After this afternoon’s proclamation by GM Omar Minaya that the Mets were satisfied with their offense heading into the season and would not be spending significant money on free agents the rest of this off-season, Jon Heyman addressed a number of free agents that have been linked to the team during his appearance on the MLB Network’s Hot Stove Live tonight.

Regarding OF Manny Ramirez, who earlier in the day rejected a one-year $25 million contract from the Dodgers, Heyman said that Los Angeles could soon choose to move on from their hopes of signing the slugging outfielder.

In that case, their plan B could be signing some combination of OF’s Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn, LHP Randy Wolf and 2B Orlando Hudson, whom Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports is waiting to see whether one of the New York teams can make room for him.

… sounds like the Dodger fans have been treated to the same exact rumors us Mets fans have been hearing all off-season…

Regarding Abreu, Heyman said that despite reports that the Chicago White Sox had submitted a one year, $8 million offer for the former Yankee, he didn’t think it made sense for the ChiSox to sign him.
