Jon Heyman, in a post to Twitter, is reporting the deal has a vesting option for a third year, but the financial parameters are not yet known.

…interesting how Abreu didn’t sign until the final hour of the off-season this past year, and is the first player off the free agent board this year…

…he had a great year for the Angels and is probably a better fit there than he would have been for the Mets…

Abreu hit .293 with 15 home runs and 103 RBI and he drove in 100 runs for the seventh consecutive season.

Update, 3:46 pm:

According to Price, the deal is worth $19 million guaranteed with a $9 million option for 2012 that can be triggered with a certain number of plate appearances, or a $1 million buyout.

He will earn $9 million in 2010 and 2011.

Abreu signed a one year, $5 million contract this past off-season with the Angels, and finished the year hitting .293 with 15 home runs and 103 RBI and 94 walks.

Abreu was part of the Angels winning rally against the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALDS, walking in front of Torii Hunter’s game winning three run home run.

Abreu told Painter:

“Of course I want to come back. I don’t want to go nowhere else. I want to stay with the Angels.”

In February, Matt had said that Abreu reached out to the Mets in an effort to sign with them and stay in New York, which you can read here.

…i was torn last winter on whether or not the Mets should bring Abreu in, primarily because his attitude and work ethic seem to walk hand in hand with team performance combined with his age…he did have a fantastic year this season, but so did the Angels…

…i’m still not sure about Abreu…he puts up good numbers and he always gets on base, but given his age and the cavern in right field at Citi Field, i wouldn’t consider him to be the best fit right now…

In a report for ESPN.com, Peter Gammons wrote:

“I still believe that one of the factors that has hurt some of the good offensive free agents this winter, like Manny Ramirez, Abreu and Adam Dunn, is the concern about how many runs they give back defensively. There is a great deal more appreciation for defense than there was a decade ago.”

Interestingly, Abreu is batting .292 against left-handed pitching during the last three seasons, while also batting .292 against right-handed pitching.

…if abreu will agree to play left field, i’m starting to lean towards the idea of bringing him in, especially if it’ll only cost the Mets around $4 million… again, as bad as he is on defense, he hits and gets on base, regardless of the month, time of day or who is pitching… the thing is, abreu’s arrival would almost guarantee that Daniel Murphy gets sent back to Triple-A, making Fernando Tatis a strong, right-handed bat off the bench, which the team desperately needs…

…at $10 million, i was totally against bringing on abreu…

Speaking of outfielders…

The Rangers signed free-agent OF Andruw Jones to minor-league contract, reports the New York Post, which the team’s GM confirmed to the Star-Telegram.

After this afternoon’s proclamation by GM Omar Minaya that the Mets were satisfied with their offense heading into the season and would not be spending significant money on free agents the rest of this off-season, Jon Heyman addressed a number of free agents that have been linked to the team during his appearance on the MLB Network’s Hot Stove Live tonight.

Regarding OF Manny Ramirez, who earlier in the day rejected a one-year $25 million contract from the Dodgers, Heyman said that Los Angeles could soon choose to move on from their hopes of signing the slugging outfielder.

In that case, their plan B could be signing some combination of OF’s Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn, LHP Randy Wolf and 2B Orlando Hudson, whom Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports is waiting to see whether one of the New York teams can make room for him.

… sounds like the Dodger fans have been treated to the same exact rumors us Mets fans have been hearing all off-season…

Regarding Abreu, Heyman said that despite reports that the Chicago White Sox had submitted a one year, $8 million offer for the former Yankee, he didn’t think it made sense for the ChiSox to sign him.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes the Mets are no longer an option for free-agent outfielders Manny Ramirez or Bobby Abreu, now that they have re-signed Oliver Perez.

Instead, Sherman explains, “The only items they are still perusing are low-cost alternatives among righty reserve bats and lefty set-up men.”

…from what i can gather, people within the team’s business operations are currently planning, selling ads, creating marketing campaigns, etc., under the directive that Manny Ramirez will not be part of the roster… this does not mean important people’s minds cannot change, of course, but it does suggest, as of now, the business is operating like he is not an option and they’re not shy in saying so…

…at any rate, i would think, now that Scott Boras is done with perez, he’ll turn his attention to ramirez… and, if the Mets are an option, we will know soon enough…
