The Red Sox have traded OF Coco Crisp to the Royals for relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez, reports Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

“The Astros seem likely to trade Ty Wigginton and Jose Valverde,” according to the Houston Chronicle.

Wigginton, who bats right handed, and played third base and left field, hit .285 with 23 HR and a .350 OBP last season for the Astros, while batting .340 against lefties.

Meanwhile, MLB.com reports, “The Nationals are still players in the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes,” according to a baseball source.

Speaking of the NL East, now that the Cubs signed Ryan Dempster, the Padres may re-start talks with the Braves regarding Jake Peavy, says the San Diego Union-Tribune.

In fact, at SI.com, Jon Heyman says Peavy will either play for the Padres or the Braves next season, while citing a league executive.

Buzz: Debunking Crisp for Pagan

As noted earlier, WFAN’s Ed Coleman reported on-air that the Mets and Red Sox are discussing a swap of Angel Pagan for Coco Crisp.

…however, i was able to speak with two people connected to the Mets, both of whom dismissed the idea of trading pagan for crisp…

Furthermore, the Boston Globe recently wrote the following to their blog, Extra Bases:

“Ignore that rumor started about Coco Crisp heading to the Mets for Angel Pagan. Theo Epstein, through media relations director John Blake, said that the Red Sox have not been talking to the Mets.

“That the story was a fabrication.”

Also, at his blog for Newsday, David Lennon relays his talk with a Mets official, who more or less says the same thing.

By the way, Pagan hit a two-run home run today and is now batting .419 this spring with 10 RBI.

Buzz: Pagan for Crisp

According to WFAN’s Ed Coleman, the Mets and Red Sox are discussing a swap of Angel Pagan for Coco Crisp.

…it’s not an official trade…all ed said was that it’s a rumor, which is gaining steam…of course, Mike and the Maddog then proceeded to discuss the potential deal as though it had already been completed, which it hasn’t…

In 2005 with the Indians, Crisp hit .300 with 18 HR and 15 stole bases.

However, since going to the Red Sox, in 2006 and 2007, spanning 940 at-bats, he’s hitting just .266 with 73 extra base hits, 50 stole bases while striking out 151 times.

…this trade is confusing to me…i suppose coco is the more established of the two players, but i just can’t figure out why either team is interested in such a swap…i’m wondering if maybe there is more to it, maybe a pitcher involved, etc…

Crisp will earn $4.75 million in 2008, followed by $5.75 million in 2009, after which he can be a free agent unless his team exercises a $8 million option for 2010.
