In addition, Davis went 1 for 2 in the Arizona Fall League’s Rising Stars game, helping the AFL West to an 8-7 victory over the AFL East.

…Davis has been very impressive this Fall and has certainly generated a lot of talk and opinion as to whether or not the Mets should give him a shot at first base this Spring…i think he certainly needs more seasoning in the minors…he has played in just 172 professional games so far, but i think he will spend a lot of time at the Major League camp this Spring, especially if the Mets can’t find a long term solution at first base this winter…

Also, Josh Thole is hitting .414 for the Leones del Caracas in the Venezuelan League this fall, leading the league in batting, and has hit one home run and 11 RBI in 22 games.

…Thole was really impressive in his cup of coffee for the Mets in September, but kind of fizzled towards the end…i do think that this kid can hit, although i’d like to see him develop a little more power, and given that there aren’t any great alternatives outside the organization at the moment, i do feel that at some point, he will get his chance with the big club…

In his AFL debut yesterday, Davis went 4 for 6 with a grand slam and six RBI, and you can read about that game here.

Silva says that by taking a risk on Davis, the Mets have more money to invest in players like John Lackey.

…i would agree in theory Mike…i like that Davis is young and there is a lot of promise with him, but if the Mets are willing to give him a shot at first base, why not allow Fernando Martinez time to develop, rather than acquire a big bat in the outfield…

…i think that the Mets should afford every top prospect the chance to succeed as i believe developing from within the organization rather than from the outside is the true path to success, but i believe that both Martinez and Davis need more time in the minors…that said, if the Mets acquire, say Matt Holliday or Jason Bay, and go out and get a first baseman to replace Daniel Murphy, it cuts the career path of these prospects short with the Mets…its a tough call…

Davis hit .298 with 20 home runs and 71 RBI between Single-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton in 2009.

In 40 games since being promoted to Double-A, the 22–year-old Davis is hitting .299 with 18 extra base hits and a .379 OBP this season.

Last week, Baseball America put Davis on their Prospect Hot Sheet, writing, “Davis has clubbed more home runs this season and compiled a higher slugging percentage than any of the other four first-round first basemen from the 2008 draft.”

In a post NY Baseball Digest, Mike Silva talks about Davis with Toby Hyde of Mets Minor League Blog, as well as Brian Moritz of the Press & Sun Bulletin.

According to Baseball America, “Davis has clubbed more home runs this season (12) and compiled a higher slugging percentage (.486) than any of the other four first-round first basemen from the 2008 draft.”

In 31 games since being promoted to Double-A, Davis is batting .308 with seven HR, 24 RBI and .400 OBP.

…i asked some people who know the team’s system about davis the other day, and i left with three things, so far, a) he has adjusted well to hitting off speed pitches, something he struggled with last season, b) he is capable of being a major-league first baseman, but c) he has such a strong arm, so strong he could be a relief pitcher, it might make sense to eventually put him in right field, especially if the Mets are committed to Daniel Murphy at first…

The report also comments on Mets 17-year-old Single-A SS Wilmer Flores, who is showing strong discipline at the plate.

According to Heyman, the Mets had a meeting yesterday to discuss their prospects, and seem to have no interest in trading Jenrry Mejia, Brad Holt, Fernando Martinez and Ike Davis.

Heyman says a deal for Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay will certainly cost some combination of Holt, Mejia, Davis or Martinez, and so a deal with the Mets is not likely to happen.

What’s more, Heyman says the Mets have struggled to match up with Billy Beane and the A’s, regarding OF Matt Holliday; they’ve checked in on Aubrey Huff, but the Mets see him most as a DH, much like they view Nationals OF Adam Dunn; and so, in the end, he does not see any imminent trades for the Mets.

However, Heyman said the Phillies do have the necessary talent to acquire Halladay, who they are very much interested in, as do the Giants, and possibly the Cardinals and Dodgers.

“I wish we would have won, but it was good to get my feet wet,” Davis told Brian Moritz of the Press & Sun Bulletin.  “The first (hit is) always a good one.  You don’t want to go seven games without a hit, so it’s good to get that first one out of the way.”

Davis was the first player drafted by the Mets in 2008.

He had been hitting 288 with a .376 OBP, 27 extra base hits and 28 RBI in 59 games in Single-A, during which he struck out 52 times.

By the way…

Moritz also writes, “Mike Antonini has been moved from the B-Mets starting rotation to the bullpen on orders from the big-league club.”

The left-handed Antonini, 23, has a 5.37 ERA with 52 strike outs in 60 innings through with Double-A Binghamton, during which left-handed hitters are batting .293 against him.

• Matthew Cerrone: Can you give me a scouting report of yourself?
• Brad Holt: I throw a lot of fastballs.  I’m able to locate fastballs in and out.  And now the breaking ball is coming along pretty well, I’m getting to where I can locate it.  Since I’ve been here we’ve been working on the change-up a lot, and it’s getting a lot more consistent too and I’m able to locate it down in the zone.  But, mainly I just work off the fastball and everything else is coming along.

…it should be noted, off camera, holt’s teammates were yelling, ‘fastball, fastball,’ during his entire answer, which he was trying not to laugh at…

…to me, what’s most noteworthy here, is not who is ranked where and why, but, instead, goldstein did not list a single Mets prospect as being worthy of his five-star status…

Davis, on playing in New York, not Atlanta, whose compensatory pick the Mets used to draft him, as quoted by Laurila:

“It would be a lot different.  I don’t know where their minor league system is, but I wouldn’t be up here in New England right now, and I don’t know their rules.  But it would have been cool either way.  I’m really excited that the Mets drafted me.  It’s a big organization and they like to win; they try to do everything they can to win.”

Among other things, Laurila asks Davis about who he best compares to, what is his approach at the plate, hitting lefties compared to righties, and advice from his father, who was a former major-league pitcher.
