Opinion: Why I have Hope, Why I’m Skeptical

The third-place Mets went 9-18 in June, their worst month since September 2003, which, subsequently, is when I started MetsBlog.com.  Hi, Art Howe?
Frankly, I will never understand why some fans are so eager to give up so early in the season.  What’s the fun in that?  I mean, we wait all winter, all spring, day-dream [...]

Blog: What Would MetsBlog Do?

In a post to Bats, the baseball blog for the New York Times, Jay Schreiber opens the suggestion box, and asks what you would do if you were Omar Minaya.
…well, honestly, i’m not sure i’d want to be Omar Minaya right now…
Rich Coutinho of 1050 ESPN Radio lists five reasons why he should do nothing.
In an e-mail [...]

Note: The Next 16 Games

Well, here is where it gets interesting…
Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel have been essentially saying, ‘Keep it at or about .500, click days off the calendar, stay within striking distance of the Phillies and wait for the cavalry to return, i.e., Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, John Maine, Oliver Perez and JJ Putz, and hope there [...]

eMailbag: Quick Qs, Quick As

Dyer 18: Is it possible that if the Mets continue to struggle, and find themselves in third or even fourth place in the division, will Omar decide to trade one of the core players in order to acquire some young talent?
Matthew Cerrone: Well, they’d have to tank hard in the next two weeks or so, because the trade [...]

Note: Team Colors, Hats and Jerseys in 86

The MLB Network is showing Game 5 between the Mets and Astros from the 1986 National League Championship Series.
First of all, it is a treat to watch Dwight Gooden take on Nolan Ryan – what a match up.  I forgot Ryan had such a strong curve ball, as I always think first of his fastball.  [...]

Note: The $60 Million Roster

The Mets current 25–man roster will earn roughly $60 million this season, or around the same level as the Rays, Orioles and Twins.
“We can deal with this.  We’re not as bad as people think we are,” Alex Cora said last night, according to MLB.com.  “Don’t feel sorry for the Metropolitans.”
…i love that he called them the Metropolitans… that’s [...]

Opinion: The Mets just Can’t Get it Together

The Mets have lost eight of their last 11 games.
“We’re not doing too many things right,” David Wright said, following yesterday’s loss to the Rayes.  “When you look at the standings, we’re in striking distance, but we’re concerned about how we’re playing right now.”
Fortunately, The Phillies went 1-8 on their just-completed home-stand.
“We’ll be fine,” Shane [...]

Opinion: It’s Just One Loss

The thing that troubles me most about Friday night’s loss, and, frankly, the repeated slip ups, mistakes and errors, is knowing that the last two seasons each came down to one game, any one loss, which could have staved off the Phillies and put Mets in the post season.
I fear the same will happen again…
For [...]

Live: Blogging from Yankee Stadium

My Yankee-fan wife and I will be attending today’s Mets-Yankees game in the new Yankee Stadium.
She and I will be sitting in the bleachers, and I’m wearing my white Mets shirt, so hopefully I make it back alive.
As usual, while out at the ballpark, I will be making live posts using Twitter, including pictures and [...]
