In 54 games since being promoted to Triple-A, the 26–year-old Jonathan Malo is hitting .186 with just four extra base hits and two stolen bases.

…malo is 26, and if he wasn’t called upon this season, when the Mets were always in need of middle infield help, i am not sure he’ll ever be called upon… that said, malo seemed to turn heads in spring training, and clearly got the attention of Jerry Manuel for the way he plays the game…

Malo hit .233 with one extra base hit in 13 spring training games.

…i was able to talk with malo last month for a quick Q&A, which you can read by clicking the link below:

Matthew Cerrone: I think you made an impression on Mets fans during spring training – and obviously the manager, Jerry Manual, had a lot of good things to say about you and your style of play. How does that make you feel? Does that help you? Does that motivate you? What’s that like?

Jonathan Malo: It’s a great motivation. I didn’t see that coming, coming into spring training. I’m just trying to take every advantage of all this. Unfortunately, I got to a slow start, but hopefully things are going to turn around and I’ll try to finish strong.

Matthew Cerrone: Who were your favorite player’s growing up? Do you model yourself after anybody?

Jonathan Malo: Not really. I’m from Montreal, so I grew up an Expos fan, and I saw all those guys, Pedro Martinez and Vladimir Guerrero, you know all those guys from the Expos all those years, the good years they had. I can’t really model myself to any player there.

Matthew Cerrone: One of the big stories this year with the big league club is all the injuries they’ve had. How aware are you guys of those things? I must imagine it makes you think there are opportunities, or do you just not pay attention?

Jonathan Malo: Well we know what’s going on. We follow the team, but we can’t think about that all the time because that’s when we start struggling and try to do too much. Obviously we are aware of what is going on, and hopefully, at some point, we’ll get our chance.

Matthew Cerrone: At this point, I mean obviously you grew up with the Expos and that’s who you are a fan of, do you follow the club in that way? Do you know where they are in the standings and stuff like that? Is it that conscious?

Jonathan Malo: Yeah. Everyday I try to look at the Mets’ score and see how they did, but it’s just for myself. It’s not like I try to see who is hurt, who is not playing well. I’m just trying to follow the team and see that hopefully they are doing good. Even if my goal is to get up there, I want them to do good.

Matthew Cerrone: As far as your game goes, you just said you were getting off to a little bit of a slow start. What can you do? Are there guys here that you can kind of lean on and talk with? I know there are some veterans with the team. How do you work through those kind of things?

Jonathan Malo: There are a lot of older guys here. You know, they have been through some rough times at some point in their career. I try to talk to them a little bit, talk with Mike Lamb and guys that have been around the game and been in the big leagues for a few years. I try to get the most out of it from these guys.

Matthew Cerrone: You play a lot of different positions. Where are you most comfortable? Where do you enjoy playing the most?

Jonathan Malo: Lately, I have been playing a lot of shortstop. It feels good to be back there because I haven’t played there a lot, regularly, in the past two years. Second base, I love to turn double plays. Third base, all those positions, I really like a lot. I don’t really have one favorite. Anything that will get me up there.

Continuing his yearly list making over at ESPN.com, Keith Law released his Top 100 prospects in baseball. He ranked two Mets in the top 100: OF Fernando Martinez at #16, and SS Wilmer Flores at #55.

Law remains high on Martinez, saying he has a “special bat” and writing:

…Martinez offers huge power potential, putting on a display in BP, but it has only briefly started to emerge in games. He has very quick and strong wrists, letting the ball travel on him before exploding quickly and making solid, hard contact. In the field, he’s looking more likely to end up in right field…

Law writes that the Mets face a tough decision with where to place Martinez to open ‘09: back in Binghamton for a third season, or advancing him to AAA Buffalo at age 20, even if he may not be quite ready.

As for Flores, Law is high on his offensive potential, as well:

Flores’ calling card is his bat — he has quick wrists and is very short to the ball, squaring very well except on balls toward the bottom of the zone. Flores plays short now but is below-average already, and he’ll move to another position as he fills out, probably third base given his arm strength and the fact that his bat will play there.

Law believes that while it’s early in his career, the young Venezuelan could end up topping 30 homers a year.

These seem like fair enough rankings… it says a lot that despite years of injuries, Martinez is still this highly regarded, though perhaps his successful DWL season helps that… hopefully he’s healthy this year… as much as i’d like to see him at Citi Field next year, the most important thing is getting his development on track and not rushing him like they have…

…also pleased to see Flores so high, which means that with a big year in the Sally League, he could shoot up this list next year…

…i think this is a fair ranking, but one that could be drastically different next year… as Law notes, Wilmer Flores and Jefry Marte are two of the team’s top six prospects, and played at Kingsport and in the GCL, respectively in ‘08… as such, big seasons further up the ladder should catapult them, as well as the rest of the system… also, better seasons out of first rounders Ike Davis and Reese Havens should help, as well…

Law ranks the Braves as the fourth best system, while he places the Marlins at eight, the Phillies at eleven and the Nationals at twenty nine, while the Yankees are fifteenth.
