The Angels have signed OF Torii Hunter to a five-year contract worth at least $80 million.

…wow, this came out of nowhere. hunter was pegged for the White Sox or Rangers, and a decision wasn’t expected to be made until after thanksgiving. so much for that…

…the angels haven’t been known for breaking the bank in recent years, i’m anxious to see if this move is in place of trading for a miguel (tejada or cabrera), or in addition to pursuing a trade…the Angels still have their coveted prospects, and are now loaded in the outfield as well, if they make a move to bring in cabrera, that line-up would be lethal…

…in an effort to stay on top of what’s happening outside of queens, here’s a quick update from around the rest of league…

Though the Boston Herald writes that talks between the Red Sox and free-agent 3B Mike Lowell are ‘heading nowhere,’ ESPN.com’s Buster Olney told Mike and Mike this morning that he expects Lowell to re-sign with the Sox either today or tomorrow.

Free-agent OF Torii Hunter is scheduled have dinner with the Rangers tonight, writes the Dallas Morning News, though he also told Yahoo! Sports he is interested in the Dodgers, as well.

According to multiple reports, though Mariano Rivera is expected to sign a three-year deal with the Yankees, according to the Daily News, he is still trying to tack on an option year.

The Toronto Sun reports that the Blue Jays have talked with free-agent RHP Matt Clement, who has had a serious of arm trouble over the last few years.

Buzz: Twins Target Gomez

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the Twins are targeting young position players like B.J. Upton and Delmon Young of the Devil Rays as well as Mets OF Carlos Gomez in an effort to bolster their offense.

The Twins will need a center-fielder if Torri Hunter leaves via free-agency.

Christensen writes that the Twins may be willing to part with Kevin Slowey, Matt Garza or Scott Baker in a deal.

In parts of two major league seasons, Garza is 8-13 with a 4.47 ERA. In three minor league seasons, Garza is 22-14 with a 2.88 ERA with an average of over one strikeout per inning.

…they are nice arms, no question, but if the mets send Gomez to the twins, it better be part of a deal to get Johan Santana…

Buzz: Keep Torii Hunter, Trade Johan Santana

On Sunday, at his blog for ESPN.com, Buster Olney writes…

“Heard this speculation this week: The Twins will re-sign Torii Hunter and at the same time, aggressively look to shop Johan Santana for prospects - a show, with the first move, that the team is not headed into a major period of rebuilding.”

…the sense i keep getting is that the Twins will re-sign one of them, which i guess would mean that if they do not re-sign hunter now then santana will stay…on the other hand, if they re-sign hunter now, santana is a goner, but when…will they trade him now, knowing it’s the best way to maximize his trade value…or will they wait, get another round of early-season ticket sales with both players on the roster to start next season, and then re-visit a santana trade at next year’s deadline…

…either way, you know the drill, with the talk around baseball having been that to get santana, a team like the Yankees will have to part with one of Chien-Ming Wang, Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes, along with Melky Cabrera and a prospect such as Ian Kennedy or Jose Tabata…as i have said in the past, in Mets terms, i think that reads like John Maine, Lastings Milledge and Fernando Martinez, and i’m not even sure that is a correct comparison, but it’s as close as the Mets can get…

Buzz: Braves to ‘Bid Big’ on Hunter

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Nationals, White Sox, Braves, Yankees and Dodgers are ‘expected to bid big’ on free-agent OF Torii Hunter.

Multiple reports in the last few months have noted how Hunter rejected a four-year, $56 million offer from the Twins, which Hunter has denied.

…either way, the buzz in baseball has long been that he will seek a deal similar to what was given to Vernon Wells or Ichiro Suzuki, and rightfully so, paying him roughly $100 million over six years…the thing is, if the Braves are unwilling to give that type of money to free-agent OF Andruw Jones, who will seek the same contract, why would they give to hunter, as the minnesota newspaper suggests…

…personally, i think the Braves are far more likely to trade for andruw’s replacement, such as Red Sox OF Coco Crisp…
