Michael Baron: What a night that was. It was cold, it was pouring rain, and it was an epic battle inside one of the great baseball rivalries of the time. After Keith Lockhardt tripled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 15th inning, there wasn’t much hope in the rain-soaked and emotionally drained crowd at Shea Stadium. But once Shawon Dunston reached on a leadoff walk, suddenly the feeling shifted away from hopelessness.

By the time Robin Ventura came to bat, the Mets had already tied the game, and the bases were still loaded with one out. Everyone just seemed to know the Mets were going to win the game; it was just a matter of how. When Ventura connected, I didn’t need to look – I just turned to high five and hug my dad and the next thing I saw was Ventura being mobbed between first and second base. It wasn’t until we had turned on “Mets Extra” in the car that we learned Ventura had hit the ball out of the park, but because he did not get to round the bases, it had only counted as an RBI single. Maybe I should’ve looked after all…
