That's the chewy meaty center of the matter. If Picard can show that the Madoff was essentially a silent partner in the different part of the Wilpons business, they're toast.

The last line is killer - " Sterling Partners relied on BLMIS accounts as a primary source of liquidity".

if you understand how Ponzi schemes work, the ring leader NEVER lets you take money out of the account. If Bernie gave the Wilpons this speical privelage, it was one he NEVER gave his other clients. Woof - its gonna be a long year in Metdom ...

See, because I'm trying to figure out what the Wilpons/Katz might have done that was "wrong" aside from trusting an amoral a-hole.

"But interviews with current and former associates of Mr. Wilpon and Mr. Katz, as well as former employees of the club, former employees of Mr. Madoff and others, make it clear that the relationship was substantial and that the role Mr. Madoff played in the financial life of the ball club and the Wilpon and Katz families was pervasive."

Those leaks just didn't come from the Picard side, they came from the Mets side as well. You see, when you're writing something like this, you're looking for confirmation to what Picard alleges. The reporters believe they found that confirmation with former associates of Wilpon and Katz. That's pretty damning right there. The reporters in that story presented both sides as best as they could. It's up to the reader to decide what's what in this case.

But try not to enjoy it so much, all right? You've got a family who spent fifty years building up a corporation who now are in the position where they might lose everything because they trusted a con man and it looks like you couldn't be happier about it. How's that sucking hole in your chest where your heart used to be?

See my comment above and read part VIII of the lawsuit: http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/metsmadoffsuit02042011.PDF

IF money was was being shuttled in and out of these accounts as quickly as is being alleged, it's a big problem that is much different than if the Wilpons had lost $500 million in long-term investments the day Madoff was arrested. How could anyone know how much of that $500m was honestly earned vs. the result of ill-gotten gains funneled back into a different Madoff account?

That's a huge "if."

i love how everyone paints a victim to be a criminal just because they have more money than some of the other victims....if you had money invested with a broker you trusted, and he showed you good returns, and years late ryou find out he was a crook, did you deserve to be sued? i just dont follow this logic...now if someone can PROOVE that they new more than the average madoff investor or the GOVERNMENT than it would eb a different story...your reaction is exactly what this trustee is trying to elicit from the public to put pressure on the wilpons, and you are blindly buying in without any facts or research...so who is stupid?

The Wilpons/Katz group and associated entities have lost all credibility. This is about baseball because they need to make the appropriate ammends to settle and this will impact the Mets/Citifield/SNY. Their greed had destroyed the organization and the best thing they can do now is sell and go away because I for one am disgusted by their lies. In the meantime, all Met fans cannot help but assume any moves that are made are somehow related to the Madoff association. Spring training and the season will not make this go away. Not talking about it is foolish since this issue is much more important than baseball.
