Postgame: Mets 2 Marlins 0

by Ted Berg on September 27th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

The Mets beat the Marlins, 2-0, at Shea today, keeping their postseason hopes alive. For a box score and recap, go to SNY.tv.

Johan Santana was spectacular.

Santana, throwing on short rest after a 125-pitch outing on Tuesday, started out the game by getting Marlins sparkplug Hanley Ramirez to fly out on the second pitch and proceeded from there. He held the Fish to three hits in a complete-game shutout, striking out nine and walking three.

When, after 104 pitches, Santana returned to the mound for the ninth inning, he received a standing ovation.

The Mets’ bats gave Santana a one-run lead in the first inning when Jose Reyes singled and stole second, Carlos Beltran singled to move Reyes to third, and Carlos Delgado hit a sacrifice fly.

The offense more or less went to sleep thereafter, scoring only one more run in the fourth inning when Daniel Murphy was hit by a pitch and Ramon Martinez doubled him in.

But Santana didn’t even need it.

Buzz: Olney says Mets “cautiously optimistic”

by Ted Berg on February 1st, 2008 at 12:06 pm

In a recent report for ESPNNews, Buster Olney claims that the Mets are, according to a source, “cautiously optimistic” that a deal with Johan Santana will be completed by today’s 5 p.m. ET deadline. Olney reports that the deal will likely be closer to Santana’s wishes than to the Mets’ due to the leverage that Santana now has.

Olney did not report a length for the discussed deal, but said that the amount could be around $150 million.

Buzz: Rosenthal on Santana negotiations

by Ted Berg on February 1st, 2008 at 11:16 am

In a recent post at FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal cites “major league sources” and says that the Mets and Johan Santana‘s agents are still haggling over the structure of a proposed deal.

Rosenthal writes:

“The Mets’ offer is in the range of $22 million per season. The hang-up is that the Mets want the guarantee to be for five years, with vesting options that could extend the deal, sources say.”

He goes on to suggest ways the team and pitcher could compromise, including a large signing bonus or an adjustment to “the innings threshold on vesting options to make them more easily attainable for Santana.”

Buzz: Johan Santana, No-Trade Clause

by Matthew Cerrone on October 3rd, 2007 at 7:39 am

According to the Pioneer Press, due to this year’s Cy-Young results, Johan Santana will soon have a no-trade clause for next season that allows him to only be traded to one of 12 teams.

However, Santana recently told the Star-Tribune that he will waive his no-trade clause assuming he is appropriately compensated and is traded to a team with a legitimate chance of winning a World Series.

…from what i can gather out of people who are close to santana, he has a lot of interest in playing in new york, specifically for the Mets, who play in the National League with out the designated hitter…that being said, as we learned last season with Barry Zito, as well as in so many other situations, money talks…but i sense that santana knows this is his time to shine on the big stage, and the Mets are probably his best option to hit all nails on the head…but, again, money talks…and to get him right now, pre-free agency, the Mets will have to pay with a lot of young talent in a trade…in other words, i think it’s safe to say that this will be the definitive storyline of shea’s off-season, as we chase rumors about santana all around baseball over the next few months, most likely starting at the Winter Meetings in early December…

Santana will enter the final season of a four-year, $39.5 million contract next season.
