News: Mets release Villone, Re-assign Valentin

by Matthew Cerrone on March 27th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Update, 9:43 pm:

The Mets will reassign Jose Valentin to Triple-A, if he is unable to find a job with another team on a major-league roster.

Original Post:

The Mets released Ron Villone prior to today’s game, while Nelson Figueroa, Rene Rivera and Andy Green were sent to minor leagues camp.

Also, Cory Sullivan and Carlos Muniz were optioned to Triple-A.

…in other words, Jeremy Reed and Marlon Anderson look likely to make the bench, with Ramon Castro, Fernando Tatis and Alex Corai still believe Nick Evans will travel north, but be replaced on the roster with Livan Hernandez on April 11…

also, this would suggest Robert Parnell and Brian Stokes are likely to join Francisco Rodriguez, JJ Putz, Sean Green and Pedro Feliciano in the bullpen on Opening Day, with Darren O’Day competing with Fernando Nieve and Elmer Dessens for the final spot… i’m guessing it will go to o’dayso, feliciano will be their only left-handed reliever, in a division with Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins

Notes: Manuel on Perez, Maine, Bench, etc.

by Matthew Cerrone on March 26th, 2009 at 7:45 am

Yesterday, after the game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that David Wright will return to the lineup on Friday.

He also noted Ryan Church will play later today, when the team travels to Jupiter to face the Cardinals.

In yesterday’s game, Oliver Perez gave up six runs on six walks and five hits in just 3.2 innings pitched.

Speaking about Perez, Manuel said, “When you don’t have command, and you don’t have extra velocity, you’re gonna struggle.”

Manuel said he will need to pay close attention to what happens with Perez during the rest of spring training, again saying, “We’ve just got to pay close attention to him.”

Today will be Maine’s first start using a new and improved, longer stride in his delivery, and a different grip for his slider.

He said he is very happy with the bullpen, adding how he saw five ‘really good’ relievers today.

Lastly, Manuel said the final spot on the bench will mostly depend on the make up of rest of team, though the final decision will not be made until the team travels north to New York.

Note: Wright, K-Rod, Putz Back In Camp

by Mike Nichols on March 24th, 2009 at 9:27 am

This morning, David Wright, Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz arrived back in Mets camp.

Just as he did with Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes, Jerry Manuel is expected to give Wright a few days off due to the amount of playing time Wright had during the tournament.

…on a side note, if you watched the championship of the WBC last night, then you saw baseball at it’s finest, or as Joe Janish of Mets Today put it, baseball before PEDs

News: Hill signs with Padres

by Matthew Cerrone on March 23rd, 2009 at 2:55 pm

According to the Washington Post, free-agent RHP Shawn Hill signed a non-guaranteed, minor-league deal with the Padres.

Adam Rubin of the Daily News said this morning that he expected the Mets to make a push to sign Hill, who was released by the Nationals last week.

In 2008, Hill went 1-5 in 12 games with a 5.83 ERA in 63 innings pitched.

Note: Livan’s Comments, Jerry’s Comments

by Matthew Cerrone on March 18th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Livan Hernandez allowed one run on five hits, while striking out three through five innings today.

Hernandez told reporters he is happy with his performance today, again noting that he is not here to take anyone’s job.

Later, Jerry Manuel said Hernandez has put himself in a very good position with the way he is pitching.

“He has a presence about him on mound and in the dugout,” Manuel said.  “He brings a different energy.”

Manuel said he will give Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran, and the other players returning to camp this week, ‘an emotional break from baseball.’

“It’s important that the pitchers get in a routine,” he explained.

Manuel said Oliver Perez may start Friday, though that is not yet official.

Lastly, he said Brian Schneider is ‘day to day,’ while pointing out the team does not yet know what the issue is.

Earlier today, the Daily News said Schneider missed today’s game with tightness behind his knee, which he said was not serious.

Just a reminder, today’s game will be re-run tonight at SNY at 7 pm.

Misc: Schneider’s Knee, Redding and WBC

by Matthew Cerrone on March 18th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Brian Schneider did not play today due to tightness in back of his right knee, which he said was not serious, according to the Daily News.

from what i can gather, this isn’t a big deal… just a catcher with some mid-spring pain… shocker

Meanwhile, Tim Redding threw from flat ground today.

…i believe he is still on target to start the year on the disabled list with shoulder discomfort…

…i’m starting to wonder if the plan will be to use Livan Hernandez in the rotation, while putting Nelson Figueroa in the bullpen to be used as a long reliever and spot starter

Oliver Perez and Carlos Delgado have returned to camp from the WBC.
