The Marlins played the Nationals last night in the only other game involving NL East teams on the Monday schedule.
Ricky Nolasco struck out eight while allowing just two runs on four hits over eight innings as the Marlins rallied to beat the Nationals, 4-2. Hanley Ramirez led the offense with three hits.
Scott Olsen returned from the DL for Washington and tossed seven strong innings.
Ryan Zimmerman hit his thirteenth home run for the Nationals.
In other news…Phillies pitcher J.C. Romero may face battery charges for an incident that took place on Thursday after the team’s game against the Rays.
Meanwhile, according to MLB.com, it’s unlikely Philadelphia outfielder Raul Ibanez will be back in action for this weekend’s series against the Mets.

The Phillies took two of three from the Blue Jays this weekend and seem to have turned things around for the moment.
J.A. Happ ran his record to 5-0 with a complete game shutout on Saturday, while Chase Utley’s double and triple propelled the team to victory on Sunday.
In a battle for Florida, the Marlins ran into a red hot Tampa Bay squad and promptly got swept by the Rays.
Florida managed just seven runs in the three game series.
In Atlanta, the Braves scored just three runs in three days against the Red Sox. Josh Beckett and Tim Wakefield shut down the Braves offense before Tommy Hanson helped salvage the finale for Atlanta with six shutout innings on Sunday.
Finally, the Orioles won two of three from the Nationals in the Battle of the Beltways. Washington scored just nine times in three games, five of which came on Sunday.
…for those of you scoring at home, if you discount the Phillies and their 16 runs this weekend, the rest of the National League East scored a total of 22 runs in 12 combined games…

Tagged MetsBlog, News |Derek Lowe was roughed up for eight runs on eleven hits in just three innings on Thursday as the Braves fell to the Yankees, 11-7. Johnny Damon and Alex Rodriguez each had four RBI, and Derek Jeter picked up four hits and scored four times for New York.
Jordan Zimmermann tossed seven strong innings, and Willie Harris and Josh Bard each had three hits to upset the Red Sox, 9-3. John Smoltz took the loss for Boston in his 2009 debut.
In Florida, the Marlins completed the sweep of the Orioles on Thursday with an 11-3 victory. Hanley Ramirez hit a grand slam and Jorge Cantu collected three hits to lead Florida’s 17 hit attack. Starter Sean West pitched six scoreless innings to pick up his third victory on the season.
…For what it’s worth, I agree with those of you who don’t believe the Marlins are any threat to the Mets.
Finally, in Tampa Bay, the Rays took the rubber game of their series against the Phillies, 10-4. Willy Aybar and Ben Zobrist each homered off rookie Antonio Bastardo to send Philadelphia to their eighth loss in their last ten games.

David Ortiz hit a three-run home run, and Jon Lester held the Washington offense in check as the Red Sox defeated the Nationals, 6-4. The crowd at Nationals Park was the largest to date in the stadium’s short history.
Lastly, in Atlanta, Francisco Cervelli and Nick Swisher each hit home runs to rally the Yankees to an 8-4 victory over the Braves.

Philadelphia managed just eight runs in three games at home against Baltimore and have now dropped six in a row.
…Remarkably, thanks to the rest of the NL East, the Phillies are still in first place despite an abysmal home record of 13-22.
In Boston, Atlanta failed to gain any momentum after defeating the Red Sox, 8-2, on Friday night. Josh Beckett was masterful, and David Ortiz kept up his hot hitting as Boston rebounded to take the final two games against the Braves.
The Yankees brought out the big crowds in Miami this weekend, but the Marlins spoiled the visitors stay by winning two of three from New York.
Josh Johnson ran his record to 7-1 with an impressive performance on Saturday while Hanley Ramirez and Cody Ross provided the spark on Sunday by going deep off the Yankees Brett Tomko.
Finally, in Washington, strong pitching performances from Jordan Zimmerman and Ross Detwiler plus walk-off hits from Willie Harris and Adam Dunn helped lead the Nationals to their second consecutive series win.
Washington’s Nick Johnson was also on fire against Toronto, going 7-for-11 with three doubles, five walks, and an RBI.
…And yes, Manny Acta is STILL the Nationals manager!

The Washington Nationals came to play again on Thursday, shutting out the Yankees, 3-0.
After a three hour rain delay, starter Craig Stammen tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings, and Ryan Zimmerman and Cristian Guzman knocked out three hits apiece to lead Washington to a series win over the Bronx Bombers.
…I can only imagine the pressure Joe Girardi is feeling after this one.
Nate McLouth homered and drove in four runs, and rookie phenom Tommy Hanson ran his record to 2-0 with six strong innings on the mound as Atlanta shut out Cincinnati, 7-0.
…Hanson allowed just three hits in six innings as he seems to be settling into a nice little groove now.
Elsewhere, Florida defeated Boston, 2-1, in a rain-shortened game at Fenway Park, and Rod Barajas hit a ninth inning home run against his former team to lead the Blue Jays to an 8-7 victory and a series sweep of the Phillies.
…According to MLB.com, Barajas is hitting .500 against Philadelphia with four home runs and ten RBI since he left the team in 2007!

…The Mets remain three games behind the Phillies, but they obviously lost a golden opportunity to pick up ground on their division rivals.
After last night Philadelphia starting pitchers now have an ERA of 5.38 this season.
…Jamie Moyer got shelled again, giving up six runs over six innings
According to CBSSports.com, the Phillies are 2-10-1 in home series thus far. But, of course, they have the best road record in the league.

Washington’s poor defense and shoddy relief pitching allowed New York to score twice in the seventh inning and once more in the eighth as the Yankees came from behind to defeat the Nationals, 5-3.
In Philadelphia, the Blue Jays scored once in the ninth inning off Ryan Madson to tie the game and erupted for five more runs in the tenth off Clay Condrey to stun the Phillies, 8-3.
Boston got to Florida’s Chris Volstad early and often, and starter Tim Wakefield had the knuckleball working throughout the evening as the Red Sox dominated the Marlins at Fenway Park, 8-2.
In other action, Cincinnati defeated Atlanta, 7-2. Chipper Jones broke out of his 0-for-21 five-day slump by going 3-for-4, but it wasn’t enough for the Braves to get by the Reds.
Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens pitched only 2 innings before a long rain delay ended his night early.
Before the game, the Braves activated 1B Casey Kotchman from the disabled list.
