Stats: David Wright’s Unique Season

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

David Wright is hitting .364 in 60 games this season, and is on pace to finish the year with over 160 strike outs, 10 HR, roughly 100 RBI and 45 stolen bases.

According to Jayson Stark, and his Useless Info Department on ESPN.com, “No .360 hitter in history has even whiffed 100 times, let alone 161.”

by the way, a few weeks ago, i argued that wright wasn’t struggling to hit in Citi Field… despite his home and away splits… i argued he was just a streaky hitter, and it so happened that the deep parts of his slumps had occured during parts of the team’s home series… wright is in the middle of one of his hot streaks, and is now batting .312 in Citi Field, while batting .414 on the road… i am more and more convinced that he’s a streaky hitter, who works hot and cold in what seem to be 10 to 20 game clusters

Wright is batting .524 in his last 11 games.

He hit .190 in the 12 games before that, he hit .418 in the 20 games before that, and .271 in the 20 games before that.

Philadelphia needed a four run fifth inning and a six run seventh on Sunday to rally past Boston’s Josh Beckett and salvage the finale of its weekend series against the Red Sox, 11-6.

The Phillies allowed sixteen runs over their first two games.braves-hat

The Orioles took it to Derek Lowe, pounding out seven runs on eight hits in just 2 1/3 innings on Sunday afternoon to clinch their series against the Braves, 11-2.

Atlanta’s lone win over the weekend came from rookie Tommy Hanson. It was his first career victory. marlins-hat

Ronny Paulino had four hits, including two home runs, and Josh Johnson pitched a complete game seven hitter on Sunday to put the cap on an impressive three game sweep by the Marlins.

Florida outscored the Toronto Blue Jays 24-11 in its three wins.

Washington was swept away by Tampa Bay as the Nationals defense fell apart and the bullpen collapsed once again.

The big news over the weekend, however, came from FoxSports.com who reported that Nationals manager Manny Acta would be fired this week.

Finally, in a bit of sad news, Washington placed Josh Willingham on the bereavement list Saturday after his younger brother was killed in a car accident earlier that morning in Alabama.

…Our thoughts and prayers go out to Josh and his family

braves-hatAfter dropping the first two contests against Atlanta, the Pittsburgh Pirates bounced back to edge the Braves on Wednesday, 3-2.

Jair Jurrjens was the hard-luck loser for Atlanta, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out seven in six innings.

Former Braves first baseman Adam LaRoche drove in two runs for Pittsburgh.

The two clubs will conclude their four game series in a matinee on Thursday.marlins-hat

Chris Volstad was roughed up early, and the Florida bullpen was knocked around late as the St. Louis Cardinals pounded out eighteen hits on the way to a 13-4 win over the Marlins.

Rick Ankiel doubled, tripled, homered and scored three runs, and Colby Rasmus hit a three-run blast to pace St. Louis.

Jeremy Hermida collected three hits for Florida and homered for the second time in as many days.nationals-hat

Aaron Harang took a shutout into the eighth inning in Washington, but it ultimately took twelve innings for the Cincinnati Reds to get past the Nationals, 4-2.

Trailing 2-0, Washington scored twice in the bottom of the ninth only to see the bullpen lose another game three innings later.

Starter Shairon Martis pitched seven strong innings, and Josh Bard had two hits and an RBI for the Nationals. Jay Bruce belted a two-run homer for Cincinnati.

…The game was delayed for two hours, ten minutes in the ninth inning…it’s the tenth time this season that inclement weather has caused either a delay, a postponement, a suspended game or a rain-shortened game at Nationals Park!

In other news…The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Braves CF Jordan Schafer, who was sent to  AAA last week, will miss about two weeks with a deep bone bruise in his left hand.

Music: The Eighth-Inning Sing-a-Along

by Matthew Cerrone on June 10th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

This morning, WFAN’s Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton announced today they were recently asked by the Mets to submit four songs to replace Sweet Caroline during the eighth inning in Citi Field.

oh, jeez, this again… ok, fine… let’s see what we’ve got

Carton, Esiason and their staff selected the ‘Curly Shuffle,’ ‘Blame it on the Boogie,’ ‘I Like it Like That,’ and ‘Mama Said Knock You Out,’ to join the organization’s selections, which include ‘Meet the Mets,’ ‘Twist and Shout,’ ‘This Land is Your Land,’ and ‘Shout.’

According to Carton, the eight choices will up for vote on Mets.com at some point in the next week or so.

again, why does there have to be sing a long in the first place… and why do we need to go through this every season… just play Meet the Mets… or don’t… or, frankly, at this point, play Sweet Caroline, play the theme to MASH, whatever, just pick something…

…hey, here’s a song idea: Watch the Game… how about that one… how about you stop distracting me with songs, and trivia, and t-shirts, and let me actually watch the game, and talk to my father about the situation at hand without having to shout over the public address system… just a suggestion…

marlins-hatJosh Johnson was impressive once again for Florida, tossing seven strong innings, and Jeremy Hermida’s launched a game winning home run as the Marlins rallied to beat the Cardinals on Tuesday, 4-3.

With the score tied at three in the ninth inning, Hermida hit a solo shot off Jason Motte to give Florida the walk-off win in the opener of the three game series in Miami.

Emilio Bonifacio also had 2 hits and 3 RBI for the Marlins.braves-hat

The Braves were held without an extra base hit last night, but Derek Lowe kept his team in the game, and shortstop Yunel Escobar drove in two runs to lead Atlanta to a 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh.

Escobar also collected three hits and scored a run while Lowe gave up three runs on seven hits over seven innings.

The first two Atlanta victories of this series have been one-run affairs.

Elijah Dukes and Cristian Guzman each hit solo home runs, but that wasn’t enough for Washington as the Reds nipped the Nationals, 3-2.

Ross Detwiler took the loss for Washington, who has now dropped eight of their last ten. The rookie left-hander allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six in six innings of work.

In other news…The 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft kicked off on Tuesday, and the Washington Nationals picked San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg with the first overall selection.

Brett Carroll tripled and hit a three-run home run, and Sean West pitched two-hit ball over eight shutout innings as the Marlins blanked the Giants Monday night, 4-0.

The two teams concluded their four game series with a split.braves-hat

It took fifteen innings in Atlanta, but the Braves edged the Pirates 7-6 in the first of four games at Turner Field.

With the bases loaded, David Ross drove in Jeff Francoeur with an infield single to give Atlanta the walkoff win.

Chipper Jones homered and was on base four times, and newly acquired Nate McLouth had three hits, including a solo home run for the Braves.

The win was the 2,000th career victory for Atlanta manager Bobby Cox.

The Nationals, Phillies and Mets were all off on Monday.

The 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft kicks off at 6:00 PM ET today from the MLB Network studios.

Yesterday, the Braves looked to turn things around by sending rookie phenom Tommy Hanson to the hill, after being shut out the first two games of the series.

Hanson retired the first nine batters he faced, but it was all downhill from there. He ended his day allowing seven runs on six hits, including three home runs, in just six innings.

Luckily for him, the Braves offense bailed him out.

Chipper Jones went 4-for-4 with a triple, two home runs, and five RBI, while Yunel Escobar had three hits and drove in the game winning run to lead Atlanta to an 8-7 win over the Brewers.

The Braves begin a three game series with the Pirates tonight.

The Marlins took on the Giants yesterday in the third game of a four game series. Ricky Nolasco returned from the minor leagues to get the start for Florida.

He allowed 10 hits and three walks over seven innings, but yielded just three runs. Juan Uribe reached base three times, and Benjie Molina collected two hits and two RBI to lead the Giants to a 3-2 win.

The Phillies brought out the big bats on Sunday and homered their way to a 7-2 win over the Dodgers, following two blown saves by Brad Lidge.  Carlos Ruiz, Shane Victorino, and Ryan Howard all went deep, and rookie Antonio Bastardo gave the Phillies his second solid start to run his record to 2-0.

The Phillies and Dodgers split the four game series.

The Philadelphia and Nationals both have an off day today.

In other news…

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves placed 1B Casey Kotchman on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf and bruised shin.

Lastly, SI.com is reporting that free-agent Tom Glavine may file a grievance against the Braves.

Glavine feels that his release on Wednesday was financially motivated, something prohibited by the CBA.

marlins-hatJosh Johnson allowed just 2 runs over 7 2/3 innings and added a 3-run home run to help his own cause as the Marlins held off the Brewers, 4-3.

Johnson was a one man wrecking crew, running his record to 5-1 on the season for Florida.

Prince Fielder singled, tripled, homered and drove in 3 runs but couldn’t prevent the Marlins from winning 3 out of the 4 games from Milwaukee.

Florida welcomes in San Francisco next for a 3-game weekend series.nationals-hat

Randy Johnson allowed just one unearned run on 2 hits in 6 innings, and the San Francisco bullpen closed the door for the Big Unit as the Giants cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Nationals in the first game of a Thursday doubleheader.

The win was career #300 for Johnson who had to wait an extra day for his opportunity after being rained out on Wednesday.

In the nightcap, the Washington offense continued to struggle, mustering only one run on 5 hits in a rain shortened 5 1/2 inning game. The Giants hit Nationals rookie Ross Detwiler hard and completed the sweep with a 4-1 win.

San Francisco’s Matt Cain picked up his 7th win against just one defeat.

Washington will try to reverse its fortunes this weekend against the Mets.phillies-hat

…We obviously hope otherwise!

Cole Hamels pitched a complete game, 5-hit shutout, and Jayson Werth and Carlos Ruiz were on base 3 times apiece to lead the Phillies to a 3-0 win in game one of their 4-game series against the Dodgers.

Hamels needed just 97 pitches to dispose of Los Angeles and give Philadelphia its 7th straight victory.

The Braves and Cubs were rained out.

In other news…According to MLB.com, the Major League debut of Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson will be pushed back from Saturday until Sunday due to Thursday’s rainout. Atlanta hosts Milwaukee this weekend.

And finally, The Miami Herald is reporting that Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder discomfort. Ricky Nolasco will most likely return to the majors and make the next start in place of Sanchez.

nationals-hatFinally! Some good news for the Nationals! After battling San Francisco and Tim Lincecum for 7 innings, Washington finally put together a big inning and scored 6 times in the bottom of the 8th to defeat the Giants, 10-6.

Anderson Hernandez and Josh Bard each had 3 hits, and Ryan Zimmerman drove in 2 runs.

Unfortunately, the news wasn’t all good for the Nationals on Tuesday. According to ESPN.com, Washington will be without former Met Jesus Flores for at least 3 months. Flores has a stress fracture of a bone in his right shoulder and could miss the rest of the season.braves-hat

In Atlanta, after being no-hit for 6 innings, the Braves rallied for 5 runs to send the game into extra innings. Atlanta scored 3 in the 8th and 2 more in the 9th on a dramatic 2-run home run by Jeff Francoeur.

Then, in the 12th, the Braves capped the dramatic comeback with a walk-off single by Chipper Jones to defeat the Cubs, 6-5.

As reported by MLB.com before the game, Atlanta finally sent struggling outfielder Jordan Schafer down to AAA.marlins-hat

Cody Ross hit a grand slam, Dan Uggla drove in 3 runs and scored 3 runs, and Hanley Ramirez went 3-for-4 as the Marlins jumped all over Manny Parra to blew out the Brewers, 10-3.

Parra gave up 10 runs on 11 hits over just 4 innings!

Anibal Sanchez returned to the mound for Florida and gave up one run in 3 innings of work before reaching his predetermined pitch limit of 70. phillies-hat

And finally, in San Diego, the Phillies continued to roll, winning their 5th in a row by beating the Padres, 10-5.

Raul Ibanez doubled, homered twice, and drove in 5 runs, and rookie Antonio Bastardo allowed just one run on 4 hits while striking out 5 in his Major League debut.

Philadelphia caught a bit of a break when Jake Peavy, who obviously wasn’t himself, had to leave the game in the first inning while suffering from the flu.

…All in all, a perfect night for the National League East…except for the Mets of course…*sigh*
