Buzz: The Cabrera and Dontrelle Market

by Matthew Cerrone on November 6th, 2007 at 8:40 am

Last week, in his blog for ESPN.com, citing ‘industry sources,’ Peter Gammons wrote that teams have been notified by the Marlins that 3B Miguel Cabrera can be had in a trade, and will cost at least ‘three significant young players.’

In a report today for FOXSports.com, Ken Rosenthal wonders if any team will meet Florida’s asking price on Cabrera, considering how much the Rangers got last season for 1B Mark Teixeira.

For instance, according to Gammons, assuming their interested, the Yankees will likely be asked to part with at least RHP Philip Hughes, while the Dodgers will likely be asked for at least LHP Clayton Kershaw or 3B Andy LaRoche, among others.

from what i understand, though, that’s not how the Marlins initially do business…instead, they identify very specific prospects who they want, like Hanley Ramirez, and then use their best in-house players, like Josh Beckett, to go get themthe thing is, odds are good that laroche or hughes are their target

However, according to Jon Heyman at SI.com, citing a ‘Marlins source,’ there is a better chance LHP Dontrelle Willis gets traded, not Cabrera.

…now, in the case of willis, because his value has most certainly dipped over the last few seasons, and considering the number of young pitchers on the trade market, unlike the cabrera situation, i suspect the Marlins will actually shop offers for willis - assuming they want to move him

Buzz: Miguel Cabrera is on the Market

…good…as i have said before, i rather the Mets send their best package off for pitching…and so, if a team like the Yankees or Dodgers end up parting with their best prospects for cabrera, it means there will be one less team in the market for pitching

Buzz: Miguel Cabrera for Top, Young Prospects

by Matthew Cerrone on October 30th, 2007 at 8:32 am

Alex Rodriguez’s departure from the Yankees could open up a ‘path’ for the Marlins to trade them 3B Miguel Cabrera, who will likely earn $11 million next season through arbitration and is eligible for free agency after 2009, reports the Miami Herald.

According to the report, the asking price for Cabrera will be ‘steep,’ such as top, young prospects like 23–year-old OF Melky Cabrera.

umm, top, young prospect…melky…in the first 1,000 at-bats of his career, he has 15 home runs and is hitting .270…i would hope, for the Marlins sake, they want more, such as Philip Hughes or Joba Chamberlainon the flip side, cabrera knows the team’s new manager, Joe Girardi, from his days coaching the Marlins…

the Mets best offer, you know the one, Mike Pelfrey, Lastings Milledge, etc, could get it done, i would think…but, i would hate to waste those bullets on a bat, though he is a tremendous hitter – and i feel that concerns over his ‘attittude’ are highly overrated…plus, it would be fun to hear Keith Hernandez bemoan and praise miguel all season long

Buzz: Willis In, Says Agent

by Matthew Cerrone on October 22nd, 2007 at 8:16 am

According to Joe Capozzi in the Palm Beach Post, the agent for Dontrelle Willis ‘met’ Marlins GM Larry Beinfest in a supermarket this weekend and left believing the team will not look to trade his client this off-season.

Capozzi speculates that Willis could earn $7 million in arbitration this off-season. He will be eligible for free agency after next season.

…the buzz from miami has long been that if one of the two is to go, it will be Miguel Cabrera, not willis, who can be traded for more pitching, which can replace willis should he either a) get traded during the season, or b) leave via free agency in one year…which all makes total sense to me

Note: Marlins Like Lo Duca, Again

by Matthew Cerrone on October 14th, 2007 at 10:25 am

In the Miami Herald, Barry Jackson gives a quick sense of the Marlins off-season plans, which could include a) trading one of Dontrelle Willie or Miguel Cabrera, b) bringing back C Paul Lo Duca, and c) possibly signing free-agent RHP Kris Benson.

By the way, the report also points out that the Marlins must pay $4 million of Carlos Delgado‘s $16 million salary in 2008.

Delgado has a $16 million option for 2009, or a $4 million buy-out clause.
