Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News, is reporting that the Mets have now officially declined the option for reliever J.J. Putz.
In addition, the Mets announced that they have exercised the $500,000 option on Mike Pelfrey.
Tagged Mike Pelfrey |Prior to tonight’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Mike Pelfrey will not make his scheduled start on Sunday against the Astros at Citi Field.
Manuel told reporters:
“This will be it for him…He will get a chance to kind of reflect back on the season, what was good and what he went through. I think it was a really growing experience for him. It’s all for the good. It’s all a part of the growth of a young pitcher.”
…i’m really not sure what Jerry found to be good about this season for Pelfrey after June 16, as he is 5-10 since then not including what happens tonight…
…it has been frustrating to watch Pelfrey this season, going back to his first start against the Reds…he would be brilliant for a few innings and then suddenly a hit would turn into three or four runs and the wheels would fall off the wagon…he is still young, but he won’t be young forever and i have not seen the progression that a pitcher of his supposed caliber should have made at this point and a determination has to be made at this point as to whether or not he is a part of the problem or will be part of the solution in the future…
After last night’s 6-5 loss to the Nationals, Mike Pelfrey addressed the media, and said:
“I had good stuff, you know, but if you look at the box score, I made some bad pitches… I gave up a home run, and when I made a mistake, they hit it. So, I don’t view this as any good outing. I had good stuff, but I didn’t get the results. So it’s not a positive outing.”
…despite the box score, it was one of his better outings of late considering he only threw 90 pitches and lasted seven innings which indicates efficiency, something he has lacked for the most part…
…that said, when you watch him, the stuff just isn’t there…the velocity is but the action on the pitches is absent, and it is resulting in too many bad strikes…
Jeff Francoeur also spoke to the media, and talked about his good night at the plate, to which he said:
“I told Jerry, ‘I’m going to win this thing tonight.’… I felt great at the plate tonight. I had great swings all night. I guess I’ve got to stop hitting the ball up the middle… every time I hit up the middle something (bad) happens.’”
…he does seem to run into some tough luck up the middle, given he also ended a game a few weeks ago hitting into a triple play…
Jerry Manuel seemed to appreciate the effort put forth by his team, despite their daily results and position in the standings, telling reporters:
“They’re fighting. They’re putting forth a tremendous effort, with energy… you can’t say that about many clubs that are in the position that we’re in, that are putting forth that type of effort to come back, to try to get into a game, try to win a game, those type of things. But at the same time, we’re still falling short.”

Mike Pelfrey was once again disappointing yesterday against the Phillies, allowing eight runs and ten hits including three home runs in six innings.
After the game, Pelfrey discussed his outing with reporters, saying:
“I thought I made some big mistakes – mistakes over the middle part of the plate…I’m disappointed, but we came back and won. That takes some of it away.”
Pelfrey had been 5-2 through June 16, but showed signs of inconsistency through that point, owning a 4.56 ERA at that time.
Now, Pelfrey is 10-10 with a 5.09 ERA, and for his career he is 28-30 with a 4.59 ERA while allowing 507 hits in 459 innings, and striking out 264.
…Jerry Manuel has suggested recently that the team is looking for some level of maturity from Pelfrey and it just hasn’t come…the thing is Mike has been in the Major Leagues in some capacity since 2006 and being his fourth big league season, i would have expected him to become what the team expected him to be which is a front line starter and he simply hasn’t become that…
…he is going to be 26 at the start of the 2010 season so he is still relatively young, but at the same time we have seen most of the star pitchers today enjoy success and become that front line pitcher at an earlier age, a few good examples being Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, and of course Johan Santana…he does have outstanding talents and that sinker, when controlled, is among the best in the business…but i have to think it is going to be now or never for Mike and i would love to see him blossom, but we simply haven’t seen any signs that he can do that…
…i think that going into the off-season, the club has to keep this in mind and not expect that he develops the way they had hoped…it would be great if he does breakout next season because that will result in more wins, but i feel that he has to be considered a back of the rotation starter if he is going to be part of the rotation next season…

Last night, Jerry Manuel had the following to after the game, when speaking about Mike Pelfrey, who allowed five runs in six innings against the D-Backs:
“He was OK, but nothing great… I would say when you see his stuff you still get excited, but there has to come a time of maturation or development where there has to be some consistently – and we’re just not getting that from him… He is a product of being inconsistent. The inconsistently is a concern, the stuff is not. We feel very confident that what he has is good enough to compete, but we need to see it on a more consistent basis, and we’re not seeing that.”
The thing is, the same can essentially be said for John Maine and Oliver Perez, as well… and, that would be OK, if Maine, Pelfrey and Perez didn’t make up the majority of what will likely be next season’s rotation.
The Mets have question marks in that rotation, let’s be honest. I think it’s unrealistic at this point to expect one of those three to magically figure it out during the off season, so to be relied upon to be a consistent, number two starter to team up with Johan Santana. Jon Niese was going to give one of those guys a run, as might even Bobby Parnell. That, however, does nothing to give Santana a legit partner in crime – in fact, it does the opposite.
The Mets cannot go in to next season again with Santana, a fifth starter like Livan Hernandez, two rookies and three guys named Hope, Potential and Someday.
Last off season, I suggested the Mets get a reliable, consistent, top-of-the-rotation starter, like Derek Lowe. Instead, they re-acquired the absolute opposite.
I believe Santana is the best pitcher in baseball. The Mets need to give him a true partner, a proven number two, who can be counted on every fifth day, anwho together will stop any looming losing streaks.
Yes, I too would love to believe Maine, Pelfrey and Perez will mature in to that type of pitcher, but the Mets can’t keep building their rotation around hope.

Bobby Parnell has been moved to the starting rotation and will start Saturday against the Padres.
In addition, Mike Pelfrey will start Monday in Arizona.
…as Matt reported earlier, it had been speculated that Parnell would take over for Jon Niese and i think that they have nothing to lose at this point by seeing what he has to offer as a starter…they need to explore all options at this point…

Yesterday, in a loss to the D-Backs, Mike Pelfrey used 107 pitches through just five innings - he allowed five hits and three runs while walking three and striking out six.
…it wasn’t an awful start, by any means, but it wasn’t a good start either… i like that he was able to keep it together, for the most part… there were a few occasions during which he was on the brink, and got out of the jam… he was able to, ‘keep his team in the game,’ as they say… and that’s fine… it’s just, against the D-Backs, in this Wild Card race, the Mets needed better…
Pelfrey said, following yesterday’s game:
“My pitch count was pretty high, pretty early… Later in the game, I made some mistakes and I paid for it… I felt like I had good stuff, I trust my stuff, I just made some mistakes… I’ve got to pound that sinker early in the count and get them to roll over.”
…he is getting a case of the John Maines, it seems, unable to pitch beyond the fifth inning, while throwing more than 100 pitches…
He has pitched beyond the fifth innings just six times in his last 12 starts, during which he has a 4.50 ERA while the Mets are 4–8.
Speaking of pitchers…
Johan Santana is scheduled to start Tuesday against the Cardinals, while Jon Niese will start Wednesday.

Last night, Mike Pelfrey allowed seven hits and walked three, but let up zero runs in 6.1 innings pitched for a win against the Rockies.
Pelfrey, speaking to reporters after the game, said of his start:
“I felt good. I told you I felt good in my last start. For me, I felt better today, I felt stronger, and hopefully that carries over in to my next couple of starts… I got in to some bases-loaded jams, and luckily I was able to get Barmes to pop up twice. I might have had too much adrenaline going, I walked three guys, which I’d like to get better at, but I felt like when I got in to a jam I made a pitch when I had to.”
He has not allowed a run to the Rockies in his last 20 pitched.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, courtesy of ESPN.com, Pelfrey is the first pitcher ever to hold the Rockies scoreless in three consecutive starts.
“I thought he and Brian Schneider worked well together tonight,” Jerry Manuel said after the game. “Again, when Mike starts out in the mid-90s, it’s gonna make it difficult for them the rest of the night, especially if he has command… His history is, as the season goes along, he gets stronger, and that seems to be where he’s at.”
…pelfrey’s learning… he didn’t have his best stuff out of the gate, and must not have had anything on his off speed pitches in pre game, because he was all inside-fastball to start, and it worked well, because, wow, that fastball was cooking… he got himself into and out of jams all night… actually, he looks to be pitching better out of the stretch of late, which was a problem for him earlier in the year as you remember… when runners were on, he kept the ball down… he pitched inside, and have the opposition’s feet shifting in the box… best part, SNY showing pelfrey entering dugout after getting out of a jam in the sixth inning and holding up one finger to Jerry Manuel, while nodding his head, as if to say, ‘send me out for one more inning, i’ve got one more inning,’ which is always nice to see…
“Pelfrey is throwing the ball about as well as I’ve seen Mike Pelfrey throw,” David Wright said, following last night’s win.
Tagged Mike Pelfrey |Last night, in a loss to the Nationals, Mike Pelfrey allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings, while walking and striking out two.
…it was a good start… not great… good… but, i can’t help but wonder the psychological impact of pitching for this team, when you know a) they can’t score a ton of runs, and b) there is essentially zero chance the offense will come from behind when losing…
Pelfrey is 3–5 with a 6.15 ERA in his last 10 starts, during which opponents are batting roughly .300 against him.
…he’s looked good at times, he’s looked bad at times… he’ll have a good inning, then a bad inning…
…Tom Glavine once told me it takes a young pitcher roughly 50 to 100 big-league starts before the game truly starts to click, and the pitcher can start putting together what he’s learned, how to use it and how to get his best results from batter to batter and start after start… this is not a rule, of course… see John Lannan… but, it’s mostly accurate if you look at when pitchers begin to settle in to a career line…
…pelfrey has made 70 starts in his career, he’s roughly .500 with a 4.50 ERA in that time… he’ll command an inning, look confident and in control, then lose focus, let up four runs and ruin the outing… he’s close… but he’s not yet there… he obviously has the potential to be a front-end starter, not quite Brandon Webb, but of that mold… the Mets were wise not to trade him two or three seasons ago… however, the clock is ticking… and he needs to start putting it together, as they say…
Tagged Mike Pelfrey |The Mets have set their rotation for the start of the second half on Thursday.
Oliver Perez will start Thursday night against the Braves in Atlanta, followed by Mike Pelfrey on Friday, Johan Santana on Saturday, Fernando Nieve on Sunday, and Livan Hernandez on Monday against the Nationals in Washington.
Jerry Manuel told reporters that Jonathan Niese would take the place of a starter who has “three bad outings in a row”, which seemingly would apply to Hernandez who in his last two starts is 0-2 with a 19.29 ERA, allowing 21 hits, eight walks, and 15 earned runs in his last seven innings and has lost his last four starts.
For now, the rotation will remain in tact, with Manuel saying:
“We’ve had some success with the rotation we have, and you gotta kind of give guys the benefit of the doubt.”
…as much as I think Hernandez has been beneficial and durable, his last two games in particular have been really alarming and with Niese pitching as well as he has been in the minors, it might be wise to consider this change as the team has lost eight of his last nine starts overall…
…if the team is going to make any sort of run in the second half, then I think Manuel simply must make changes from within as he cannot rely on ownership making a deal…in reality, things couldn’t be much worse…
