The Mets have named Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans co–players of the year for their minor-league organization.
Jon Niese was named the organization’s pitcher of the year.
For more, including who won the award for each specific level in the minor leagues, such as Mike Carp, who received the award for Double-A Binghamton of the Eastern League, click here.
Speaking of Carp, in a recent post to Baseball Prospectus, prospect guru Kevin Goldstein listed Carp second to Murphy when ranking players who took a ‘great leap forward,’ while writing, “He still struggles against good left-handers, and scouts are hoping for even more power, as it’s a tough road to come up as a first-baseman without it.”

Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that he will begin using Ryan Church every day in right field, meaning Daniel Murphy, Fernando Tatis and Nick Evans will split time in left.
Tonight, Tatis will start in left field, instead of Evans, against LHP Jaime Moyer, because, according to Manuel, Tatis is better suited to face the ‘crafty,’ veteran.
…in other words, while murphy will most certainly play every day against right-handed pitchers, against whom he is batting .321, manuel will consider the night’s left-handed starting pitcher when debating evans, who is batting .340 against lefties, and tatis, who is batting .316 against lefties…
…jeez, jerry, that’s a lot to keep track of…
Also, Damion Easley will start at second base tonight, instead of Luis Castillo, suggesting they, too, are in a lefty-righty platoon.
For what it’s worth, Castillo is hitting .268 against right-handed pitching, compared to .227 against lefties, while Easley is batting .271 against left-handed pitching and .257 against righties.
…Update…
Later, during his nightly interview during WFAN’s pre-game show, Manuel said, of the 30 games that are left, Castillo will start ‘the bulk’ of them.
According to Manuel, Castillo is simply getting tonight ‘off.’

The Mets current leaders in wins (Mike Pelfrey), RBI (David Wright), and runs scored (Jose Reyes) are all 25 years old or younger.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since 1920, no big-league team has made the post-season with three players, all 25 or younger, leading the team in wins, RBI or runs scored.
Meanwhile, David Lennon of Newsday profiles Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans and how their buddy system is helping them prove they belong in the show.

Yesterday, 23–year-old Daniel Murphy had one hit, two RBI and scored a run, while striking out once in four at bats.
Meanwhile, 24–year-old Mike Pelfrey pitched a complete game and moved to 12 wins on the season, while 26–year-old Argenis Reyes, who was 1 for 4, is batting .290 in his last 30 at bats.
The day before, 22–year-old Nick Evans had two hits and scored a run in three at bats.
By the way, Jose Reyes is 25 years old, as is David Wright, both of whom will likely be considered in voting for the National League MVP this season.
In the New York Post, Joel Sherman writes…
“(Last night) was yet another reminder that – forecasts to the contrary – the Mets’ young players are outdoing their Yankee counterparts in 2008…Murphy appeared on no Top-100 – or even Top 300 – prospect lists before the season and Pelfrey – not Hughes or Kennedy – seemed the pitcher most likely to end up back at Triple-A. But here they both are playing major roles on a first-place team…
“The Yankee system got the praise, yet the Mets had enough pieces not only to land Santana, but to sprinkle their roster with youngsters thriving in late August.”
Even the happy-go-lucky Wallace Matthews from Newsday gets in to the act, writing, “Joba who? Phil Whatsisname? Ian Whooziwhatsis,” all while praising, yes, praising, Pelfrey.
…speaking of Newsday, i dig the new web layout, guys…
