by Matthew Cerrone on May 7th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

According to Adam Rubin, at his blog for the Daily News, Orlando Hernandez has taken off the protective boot and has been cleared to do light throwing and jogging, “though his bunion remains.”

yipee…the thing is, this just makes me wonder how much closer we are to his next bizarre injury, and what will it be…

Health: The Senior Circuit

by Matthew Cerrone on April 23rd, 2008 at 7:32 am

The Mets announced yesterday that Pedro Martinez will begin throwing from a mound in 10 days or so.

…this would suggest he may not see a rehab start, assuming he makes one, until the end of May, which is what the team initially thought last week

Also, Orlando Hernandez will keep his foot in a boot for two more weeks, while continuing to rehab a strained ligament.

it was a good run, el duque, but the sun is setting, old friend

For additional information on the team’s injuries, read Newsday, the Daily News, and the Bergen Record.

by Matthew Cerrone on April 22nd, 2008 at 8:16 am

Ramon Castro caught five innings and had two hits in an extended spring training game yesterday, while working to return from a strained hamstring.

The team’s Ass’t GM John Ricco told reporters that Castro is still unable to run at “100 percent.”

Ricco also told reporters that both Orlando Hernandez and Pedro Martinez will travel to New York to be re-examined.

Health: Castro, Alou, Pedro and El Duque

by Matthew Cerrone on April 15th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Prior to tonight’s game, Omar Minaya told reporters that Ramon Castro is still working out in extended rehab in St. Lucie, noting that there is still no timetable on his return.

…honestly, i totally forgot about castro…how sad is that

Minaya once again stated that Moises Alou could play in a rehab game during this weekend.

Pedro Martinez is also rehabbing in St. Lucie, according to Minaya, as is Orlando Hernandez, who continues to wear a boot on his foot.

News: Orlando Hernandez, Back in the Boot

by Matthew Cerrone on April 9th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Orlando Hernandez is back in a medical boot, this time with a strained tendon, and will be sidelined for two weeks – at which point he’ll be re-evaluated.

Hernandez returned to New York from St. Lucie yesterday for an MRI.

i hope he makes it back…i do…because he can be an effective pitcher…the thing is, i am no longer holding my breath…and, i’m starting to feel like the Mets should approach their pitching staff as though el duque, as well as Pedro Martinez, will not return…which is not to say they will not…and i hope the eventually do…i just think it’s safer to operate under the former…for security purposes…plus, this way, they can save money on medical tape

Note: El Duque to Start in St. Lucie Tonight

by Matthew Cerrone on April 3rd, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Orlando Hernandez will make his first rehab start for Single-A St. Lucie Mets tonight at Tradition Field.

Before last night’s game, Orlando Hernandez told reporters he intends to make three minor-league rehab starts before rejoining the major-league club.

so, as i said last night, this suggests he will be unavailable until at least the middle of April, which means the Mets will only need to start Nelson Figueroa once, on April 12, assuming a) the Mets push up their rotation, to start Oliver Perez next Tuesday in the home opener, and b) el duque does not suffer a set back

Note: El Duque to Make 3 Rehab Starts

by Matthew Cerrone on April 2nd, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Before tonight’s game, Orlando Hernandez told  that he intends to make three minor-league rehab starts before rejoining the major-league club.

so, if he starts on Thursday, as expected, this suggests he will be unavailable until at least the middle of April, which means the Mets will only need to start Nelson Figueroa once, on April 12, assuming a) the Mets push up their rotation, to start Oliver Perez next Tuesday in the home opener, and b) el duque does not suffer a set back

Note: El Duque on DL through April 13

by Matthew Cerrone on April 2nd, 2008 at 8:10 am

Orlando Hernandez visited his team’s locker room in Miami, where he could work with the team’s trainers.

As noted last night, Hernandez told reporters that he expects to make his first minor-league rehab start tomorrow in St. Lucie.

He is eligible to come off the disabled list on April 13.

…from what i can tell by looking at the schedule, the Mets can pitch Johan Santana, Oliver Perez, John Maine and Mike Pelfrey up through April 12, which is when they’ll need the fifth starter…it may make sense to just pitch Jorge Sosa or Nelson Figueroa that one day, seeing as hernandez will likely be activated the next day and not necessarily needed until the following week…

…in other words, it will be difficult to determine whether the Mets should try and acquire a free agent starting pitcher, like Claudio Vargas or Woody Williams, until they have seen pelfrey pitch, and also know how stable el duque is…which should work out fine, because i suspect all free agents will now wait with bated breath, knowing what just happened to Pedro Martinez

inGame: El Duque Looked Good

by Matthew Cerrone on March 28th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

In five innings against the O’s today, Orlando Hernandez allowed one run, four hits, one walk and struck out two.

Mike Pelfrey is now on the mound.

According to Dovie, who is at the game, “El Duque was pretty impressive…Besides for the third, when he ran into a little trouble, he looked pretty impressive in the fourth and fifth, retiring the O’s in order – even striking out Kevin Millar and Adam Jones on a nasty change-up”

By the way, Dovie will be getting married on Sunday, according to his friend, David, so congratulations Dovie.
