Buzz: Pedro Martinez is Getting Ready

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, “Pedro Martinez has been working out six days a week in the Dominican Republic… with scouts from major league teams stopping by to take looks.”

Silverman believes, if Martinez is able to sign a deal with a new team by the end of this month, he’ll be ready right after the All-Star break.

…it’s so tempting… in my heart, it’s not the right move for the Mets… i have no problem with what he’ll want as a contract, or what i think he’ll deliver in terms of results… my concern is Omar Minaya may lack the guts to cut martinez if he is struggling… is he capable of looking pedro in the eye and telling him to beat it… it’s one thing to just not re-sign him as a free agent… it’s a whole other thing to actually cut him… and, the last thing the Mets need is for pedro, and all his pomp and circumstance, and all his legacy, and reputation, etc., to stink, and then, in the middle of a pennant race, omar must babysit his ego at the expense of the rotation… on the other hand, if he pitches well, how great of a show would that be… the return of pedro… like i said, it’s tempting

In a poll from MetsBlog.com on March 16, 60 percent of people said Martinez was not worth a one-year, $5.5 million deal.

based on an educated guess, i bet he signs with either the Cubs or Astros…

Buzz: Pedro could Sign a New Deal Soon

by Matthew Cerrone on April 24th, 2009 at 10:40 am

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes free-agent Pedro Martinez could sign a new contract within two weeks.

According to Rosenthal, “Interest in the free-agent right-hander has intensified.”

…the Angels, Dodgers, Nationals and Rangers have all been linked in rumor to pedro

However, as Rosenthal explains, “The Mets say they are not interested,” in Martinez.

…i bet the Nationals sign him… this is a total guess, but, it is reported they have the money, and he could help with attendance and drum up buzz for DC, which is a fairly stagnant organization these days

In a post to Brooklyn Met Fan, Adam explains why the time has come for Omar Minaya to call Martinez.

Steve Popper of the Bergen Record discussed Martinez, and wonders, “What happens if Johan Santana loses tomorrow?”

Buzz: Ben Sheets and Pedro are still Free Agents

by Matthew Cerrone on April 23rd, 2009 at 12:15 pm

In a report for ESPN.com, Jerry Crasnick takes a look at 11 remaining free agents, including Pedro Martinez and Ben Sheets.

According to Crasnick, Martinez is still waiting for the perfect opportunity to return to action, while Sheets still remains several weeks away from beginning a throwing program, in follow up to off-season elbow surgery.

Crasnick points out that a team singing Sheets must still surrender compensatory draft picks; however, compensation is not required if he is signed after the June draft.

Sheets will be looking to sign with a team on which he can make 10 to 12 starts, explains Crasnick, which he can use as a springboard in to the off-season, free-agent market.

Crasnick also provides an update on free agents Frank Thomas, Luis Gonzalez, Jim Edmonds, Mark Grudzielanek, Dave Roberts, Paul Byrd and Jay Payton.

…i know most fans will look to the trade market, but, it’s way, way too early to assume a team will dump a player in trade… for instance, from what i can tell, people in baseball are split on whether the Blue Jays will deal Roy Halladay, especially since they are in first place… that said, his name, along with Jake Peavy, Roy Oswalt, and a collection of other pitchers, will certainly be talked about…

In fact, Danny Knobler of CBS Sports believes the Indians could look to trade RHP Cliff Lee, should they fall out of the race.

…in short, there will be teams who look to dump salary, because, if tickets sales are down, given the economy, cutting payroll will be the best way to save cash… plus, there were a lot of one-year deals signed this past off-season, meaning a lot more players will be eligible for free agency

Buzz: Several Teams interested in Pedro

by Matthew Cerrone on April 16th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Jon Heyman of SI.com believes free-agent RHP Pedro Martinez has received interest from several teams in the last 10 days.

According to Heyman, “The Dodgers and Indians would appear to be prime candidates to sign Martinez.  Other possibilities include the Phillies, Brewers, Pirates, Diamondbacks and Mets.”

Heyman says Martinez remains in Santo Domingo, ‘working out every day and waiting for the right call.’

you know, if enough starting pitchers get hurt, and teams become desperate, who knows, maybe he will get the $5 million he had been seeking… i mean, talk about timing the market…

Links: NL, First Pitch, Pedro and 1969

by Matthew Cerrone on April 2nd, 2009 at 6:16 am

Tyler Kepner of the New York Times writes a preview of the National League, pointing out, “The Phillies lost no games they led after eight innings last season, and the Mets lost seven.”

The Brooklyn Met Fan explains why the Mets should ask David Wright, Edgardo Alfonzo, Keith Hernandez and Ed Kranepool to join Mike Piazza and Tom Seaver in throwing out the first pitch in Citi Field.

According to the Washington Post, free-agent Pedro Martinez is still insisting on a one-year, $6 million contract.

Ed from Mets Fever says, “Pedro doesn’t get it.”

or, we don’t get it, in that he wants to pitch, but not as much as we want him to pitch, all while accepting a deal less than what he’s asking… and that’s that

Lastly, Newsday is looking for fans to contact them with memories of the Mets and the summer of 1969.

Read: Glavine on Pedro

by Regis Courtemanche on March 22nd, 2009 at 12:06 pm

David Lennon at Newsday asks Tom Glavine about Pedro Martinez‘s recent comment that he would not accept a deal similar to Glavine’s incentive laden, $1 million contract.

Glavine replied that “you have to be mindful what the market is”, and that he didn’t want to become a burden to his team if he became injured.

On Thursday, Jon Heyman of SI.com reported that the Mets may have offered Martinez $1-2 million, plus incentives.

…i think tommy is right-on here, whoever spends $5 million on pedro is way overpaying…if heyman’s report is true, i’m glad the mets didn’t overextend themselves but atleast made a performance-based offer to pedro…

Buzz: Mets made an offer to Pedro

by Matthew Cerrone on March 19th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

Jon Heyman of SI.com believes the Mets made free-agent RHP Pedro Martinez an offer that’s well below his $5 million minimum asking price.

“I can assure you, we are not paying him $5 million,” a Mets person told Heyman.

Heyman believes the Mets offered Martinez $1-2 million, plus incentives.

Last week, Heyman wrote that Martinez is seeking a guaranteed, one-year deal, worth between $5 million and $8 million.

Also in his report, Heyman lists 33 young players who might be worth watching, including Mets OF Daniel Murphy and RHP Bobby Parnell.

Note: Fifth Starter Race Becoming Clearer

by Mike Nichols on March 19th, 2009 at 9:43 am

Yesterday, Livan Hernandez pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out three.

Later, Freddy Garcia allowed five runs on seven hits in two innings pitched, raising his spring ERA to 16.71.

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, “Mets officials appear to be seriously weighing the release of pre-camp favorite Freddy Garcia.”

Meanwhile, Pedro Martinez continues to seek a guaranteed, one-year contract, worth between $5 million and $8 million.

In the Bergen Record, Steve Popper writes, “A person close to Martinez hinted that if the money was not right, he might just walk away, unwilling to lower the bar for future players.”

Popper believes the Mets have been in contact with Martinez, but will not negotiate with him until he lowers his asking price.

Popper provides quotes from Mike Pelfrey, and others, in praise of Martinez.

In a report for ESPN.com, Rob Neyer explains why signing Martinez is ‘probably not a good move.’

Nevertheless, Rubin concludes, “Jon Niese is Hernandez’s primary competition at this point, but the Mets seem content letting the 22-year-old lefthander hone his control at Buffalo.”

Buzz: Pedro Close To Signing With Astros, Or Not

by Mike Nichols on March 17th, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Update, 7:15 am:

added to by Matthew Cerrone

i still get the sense Pedro Martinez will end up with the Dodgers… it has been the best fit for him since they lost Derek Lowe and Greg Maddux, and it remains a good fit today

Update, 11:22 pm:

MLBTradeRumors.com notes two sources, the Houston Chronicle and MLB.com, who say the Astros are not close to signing Martinez.

Original Post:

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus reports, citing a ‘baseball source,’ the Astros are close to signing free-agent RHP Pedro Martinez to a contract.

Meanwhile, Alyson Footer of MLB.com reports the Astros have scheduled a press conference tomorrow morning, but have declined to state what will be announced, stating only that it has nothing to do with the recent signing of Ivan Rodriguez.

Playing for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, Martinez pitched six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out six in two appearances against the Netherlands.
