Health: Ramon Castro has Right Quad Strain

by Matthew Cerrone on August 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am

Ramon Castro left last night’s game in the fifth inning with what the team described as ‘a right quadriceps strain.’

According to SNY, Castro will travel to New York today for an MRI.

…from what i understand, Robinson Cancel will leave New Orleans for Philadelphia this morning, just to be safe…in all likelihood, cancel would have been added to the roster on September 1, regardless of castro’s injury

By the way, Castro played in just 14 games during August and September last season, and just 11 games during August and September in 2006.

He is batting .242 in 43 games this season for the Mets, while throwing out just 29 percent of runners attempting to steal a base.

Health: Tatis Spiked, Castro is Sore

by Matthew Cerrone on August 8th, 2008 at 8:10 am

In the second inning of yesterday’s game, Fernando Tatis was spiked in the right shin by Argenis Reyes when the two players ran in to one another while chasing a fly ball off the infield.

Though Tatis limped off the field, he finished the game.

Later, Ramon Castro left the game following the fourth inning with a sore right ankle.

He later told reporters that the ankle has been sore all week, and he does not consider it to be serious.

As Adam Rubin points out on his blog for the Daily News, it is the same ankle Castro injured on Saturday in Houston.

Castro played in just 14 games during August and September last season, and just 11 games during August and September in 2006.

Quote: Castro Can Produce

by Mike Nichols on July 10th, 2008 at 9:22 am

Ramon Castro was 2-for-4, including a go-ahead three-run homerun in the fourth inning, during last night’s win versus the Giants.

Jerry Manuel, on why he played Castro instead of Brian Schneider, while speaking to reporters after the game:

“The fact that it was a left-hander that had some decent velocity.  Castro has played enough to where we feel pretty good about him catching, we feel pretty good about his bat and we try to get him enough consistent reps to where he can produce, and he’s done it.”

Manuel told reporters that Castro, who is batting .290 with 2 HR and 7 RBI in his last 31 at-bats, will not start today.

Quote: I Want To Help Team Win

by Mike Nichols on July 2nd, 2008 at 10:46 am

Ramon Casto was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, including the game tying double in the fourth inning, during the Mets 7-4 victory over the Cardinals last night.

Castro, speaking to reporters after the game:

“I just want to win. I’m glad I played good today. Every time I play more, I feel better. I just want to help the team win, especially now, when we need it. Every time they put me out there I will play my best.”

…i think the time has come for the Jerry Manuel to go with a platoon situation behind the plate…castro is too good of hitter to only be playing one or two games a week, especially with Brian Schneider struggling against lefties and castro hitting southpaws at a .400 clip…

Note: Castro’s Hesitation

by Matthew Cerrone on June 13th, 2008 at 8:53 am

Yesterday, in the ninth inning, and the bases loaded, Orlando Hudson hit a ground ball to Jose Reyes, who fired home for the force out.  Ramon Castro had a momentary chance to throw the ball to third base, for a possible double play. Castro did not make the throw.

The inning continued, and the run from third eventually scored, tying up the game.

“I didn’t think we had chance,” Castro said after the game.

…initially, i thought he should have made the throw…however, in watching it on television after the game, it appears that his momentum was pulling him towards first, plus he would have been making the throw flat-footed…it’s one of those plays, in that if the player isn’t absolutely positive he can make the throw, it makes more sense just to hold the ball

Note: Mets sign Rodriguez, have Worst Bench

by Matthew Cerrone on June 9th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

This past weekend, the Mets signed 30–year-old free-agent OF John Rodriguez to a minor-league contract.

Rodriguez, who was 1 for 3 in his first game for Triple-A New Orleans yesterday, hit .298 in 158 career games for the Cardinals in 2005 and 2006.

He spent all of 2007 with Triple-A Memphis.

Meanwhile, the Mets bench is hitting .165, which is good for last place in the National League.

…and yet, this has not stopped them from carrying two back-up catchers, as well as Abraham Nunez and Ryan Church, who will see a neurologist today because he has been unable to play regularly for the last two weeks

On Sunday, Willie Randolph told reporters that Marlon Anderson could rejoin the team on its current home stand.

Anderson is batting .167 and was hitless in his previous 18 at-bats before going on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

The Mets entered this season assuming their bench would be Damion Easley, Endy Chavez, Ramon Castro, Angel Pagan and Anderson.

However, Pagan is still recovering from a banged up shoulder, while Chavez is batting .218 and Easley is batting .238, although they have both been hitting in the last week or so.

For what it’s worth, for Triple-A New Orleans, OF Jesus Feliciano is hitting .322, OF-1B Val Pascucci is batting .301 and OF Chris Aguila is hitting .296.

Of course, Robinson Cancel is batting 375.

Note: Ramon Castro confused by Time Zones

by Matthew Cerrone on June 9th, 2008 at 10:03 am

Ramon Castro was scheduled to start yesterday, in place of Brian Schneider with a day game after a night game.

However, Castro did not arrive to the stadium until 45 minutes before the game started – and so Raul Casanova got the start instead.

Castro told reporters that he goofed up the times on his team-issued pocket schedule, forgetting to adjust for the time zone change.

…unreal…this is up there with Pascual Perez doing loops on the highway outside Atlanta…either castro is lying or he’s losing his mind…you choose

…by the way, from what i understand, Petco Park is located less than one mile from the team’s hotel

Willie Randolph told reporters that Castro’s excuse was ‘unacceptable,’ adding, “and he’ll be fined for it.”

…i don’t want to get too high-horsed about this, because who the hell really knows what’s what in this situation, but it seems to me that a united team, which is focused on winning, will not allow this to happen…i mean, even the 1986 Mets got to the ball park on time, even after spending a night in prison

…come on, guys, get it together
