Last weekend, in the Boston Globe, Nick Cafardo wrote, “The Mets are still eyeing Mariners free agent Raul Ibanez.
Today, in a report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes the same, saying, “The Mets maintain interest in Ibanez, whom they tried to acquire last July.”
Ibanez played in all 162 games this season, and hit .293 with 23 HR, 110 RBI and a .358 OBP.
He has hit at least .280 with 20 HR and a .350 OBP during each of the last four seasons with the Mariners.

He has hit at least .280 with 20 HR and a .350 OBP during each of the last four seasons with the Mariners.
According to Cafardo, “They need a consistent hitter in the outfield, and Ibanez seems to fit what Minaya is looking for.”
During last season’s trade deadline, ESPN’s Peter Gammons said the Mariners had been requesting two of Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese and Robert Parnell from the Mets in a deal for Ibanez.
…ibanez would help bring balance and consistency to the Mets lineup…for the most part, he hits roughly the same whether against lefties or righties, in april or september, with men on base or not on base…he’s not going to wow you day in and day out, but he’s reliable, consistent, will keep the line moving, and be a good supporting player to the middle of the lineup…at the same time, he’s 36 years old, which is a concern, especially if he’s looking for a three-year deal…
Tagged Raul Ibanez |Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports, citing ‘major-league sources,’ Mariners OF Raul Ibanez and LHP Jarrod Washburn were claimed on waivers.
According to Rosenthal, the team(s) that have placed the claim are not known at this time. However, he reports the Yankees were not the team who placed the claim for Washburn.
In his report, Rosenthal notes the Rays, Mets and Rangers had discussions with Mariners about Ibanez before the July 30 non-waiver trade deadline.

currently airing on ESPN News, Peter Gammons said the Mariners had been requesting two of Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese and Robert Parnell in a deal for Raul Ibanez.
According to Gammons, there will be a lot of people on waivers in August, “and the Mets figure if they can hold and see what’s available in August they think there will be some guys they can get.”

In an appearance on ESPN’s MLB Trade Deadline Show, currently airing on ESPN News, Jason Stark reported that the Blue Jays are now interested in M’s OF Raul Ibanez.
…form what i can gather, the M’s contacted the Blue Jays, not the other way around, which would suggest that the price on ibanez could be ready to come down…
…frankly, i still believe the Mariners just do not want to trade ibanez, who, stark and others, have suggested could simply end up back in Seattle as a free agent following this season…
According to Stark, the Mets expressed interest in Ibanez, ‘but didn’t get far,’ as was the case with the Cubs.
Tagged Raul Ibanez |In a report to FoxSports.com, citing major-league sources, Ken Rosenthal writes, “The Cubs are discussing trades for a left-handed hitter, including Mariners OF Raul Ibanez,” though they are not close to a deal.
According to Rosenthal, the Royals continue to seek ‘two quality prospects’ in exchange for Ibanez.
“The Mets also want Ibanez,” Rosenthal adds, “but not for the price the Mariners are seeking.”
Yesterday, on ESPN.com, Jayson Stark wrote that the Mariners continue to ask for Mets LHP Jon Niese and a second prospect for Ibanez, and unless the price drops, the Mets will pass.
According to Stark, the Mariners are asking the Cubs for Felix Pie and a second prospect for Ibanez, while the Cubs are more interested in trading OF Micah Hoffpauir, who was not listed among the team’s Top 10 Prospects by Baseball America at the start of the season.
Meanwhile, according to Scott Miller of CBSSports.com, the Cubs have also the Padres about OF Brian Giles and the Royals regarding OF David DeJesus.

According to Dan Graziano in a post to the Star-Ledger, the Reds will deal OF Adam Dunn, “but none of the teams out there looking for outfield help seem to be interested, and it’s one of the more confounding aspects of this year’s deadline.”
Recently, a reader of MetsBlog.com, Nate W, e-mailed and referred to Rual Ibanez as having a ‘negative value,’ because he will likely be a Type A Free Agent, thus returned two first-round picks to the Mariners in the off-season – assuming Ibanez signs a contract with a different team.
The same can be said right now for Dunn.
And so, the Reds and Mariners are likely to seek out two top prospects, equal to the type of players they can expect to draft with two top draft picks next season, in any trade talks involving Dunn or Ibanez today.
The value on Dunn and Ibanez has a floor right now, and so it’s understandable that a) interested teams do not want to go above it, and b) the M’s and Reds do not want to go below it, which is probably why both players have so few passionate suitors.

The Mets had been the only team interested in Mariners OF Raul Ibanez, until now.
In a report for FoxSports.com, citing ‘major-league sources,’ Ken Rosenthal writes, ‘The Cubs are discussing trades for a left-handed hitter, including Ibanez.’
…i may be letting my skepticism get to me…but, why would the Cubs even consider trading two prospects for ibanez, when they already have Alfonso Soriano, Jim Edmonds, Reed Johnson, Kosuke Fukudome and Felix Pie on staff…
According to Rosenthal, while the Mets also want Ibanez, “The Mariners are seeking two quality prospects in return.”
For instance, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the M’s have asked the Mets for Triple-A LHP Jon Niese in a deal for Ibanez, who, according to Joel Sherman in the New York Post, in considered ‘untouchable,’ as is Fernando Martinez.
Tagged Raul Ibanez |Last night, in the final moments on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, Buster Olney said:
“(On Wednesday), I think you’re going to see the Mets begin to have conversations again pick up, talks have happened with the Seattle Mariners about Raul Ibanez. The Mets will take a look at this seriously.”
In a post to ESPN.com yesterday, Olney wrote, “The Mets intend to wait until the last day or two before the trade deadline, so they can get as much information as possible about the progress of Ryan Church, as he comes back from a concussion.”
Church took live, indoor batting practice prior to Tuesday’s game, and will do so again today, after which he is likely to travel north to Port St. Lucie for a brief minor-league rehab assignment.
In a report on Sunday in the Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano wrote, “The Mets have been frustrated in their efforts to get Ibanez, having been told they don’t have (or won’t part with) the prospects the Mariners are looking for in return.”
For instance, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the M’s have asked the Mets for Triple-A LHP Jon Niese in a deal for Ibanez, who, according to Joel Sherman in the New York Post, in considered ‘untouchable,’ as is Fernando Martinez.
However, according to Sherman, Eddie Kunz, Dan Murphy and Robert Parnell are considered ‘nearly untouchable.’
Tagged Raul Ibanez |The are first and foremost interested in acquiring a relief pitcher, writes Buster Olney in a post to ESPN.com, followed by a corner outfielder and starting pitcher.
That said, according to Olney, “The Mets have continued discussions with the Mariners about outfielder Raul Ibanez, but as of early Tuesday afternoon, nothing seemed particularly promising.”
Olney adds that if talks with Seattle ‘heat up,’ they could ‘conceivably expand’ to include LHP Arthur Rhodes.
Speaking of outfielder, according to Jon Heyman in a recent
report for SI.com, “The Dodgers are one of a few teams showing interest in embattled superstar Manny Ramirez and are currently in discussions with the Red Sox…However, the Mets are said to not be involved.”
Speaking of Ramirez, also at SI.com, Tom Verducci explains why the Red Sox should simply keep Ramirez and also pick up his $20 million option for 2009.
