Buzz: Fielder, Peterson, and the Brewers

by Michael Baron on October 12th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Jon Heyman of SI.com says that the Brewers will attempt to sign first baseman Prince Fielder to a long term contract this winter, and would only trade him if those talks go sour.

…he is the prototypical first baseman that the Mets should be interested in, but Fielder will command a kings ransom in any potential deal, and i worry that the Mets don’t have the type of players that the Brewers would be interested in to get a deal together

Fielder finished the season hitting .299 with 46 home runs and 141 RBI, and played in all 162 games.

Meanwhile, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Brewers GM Doug Melvin has already met with former Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson about filling their pitching coach vacancy.

News: Willie tells Reporters he is Disappointed

by Matthew Cerrone on June 17th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Speaking to reporters a few moments ago outside the team hotel in Anaheim, while wearing a black hat and a black shirt, Willie Randolph told reporters that he is very disappointed that he will not be able to fulfill his dream of winning a championship for the Mets and for their fans, adding, “That’s what I’ve always been about.”

He said he’ll miss his players, and then he walked off leaving the hotel with no other words.

Rick Peterson then talked to reporters and, in standard fashion, used a ‘Mets are a House’ metaphor, equating himself to a hardwood floor that is being ripped out of a house in need of work, while Dan Warthen, his replacement, will be the Tuscan Tile of this new home.

…seriously…that’s what he said, and, still, six years later, i have no idea what he’s talking about…what a fascinating guyi wish him well, and regret that i never had a chance to sit down and talk with him about cognitive linguistics

News: Mets fire Willie Randolph

by Ted Berg on June 17th, 2008 at 5:00 am

The Mets have fired Willie Randolph, and named bench coach Jerry Manuel their interim manager.

Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto have also been relieved of their coaching duties.

Ken Oberkfell will be hired as the team’s new first base coach, Dan Warthen will be the new pitching coach, and Luis Aguayo will be Manuel’s bench coach.

Oberkfell had been the manager of the team’s Triple-A New Orleans affiliate, while Warthen had been the pitching coach, and Aguayo the team’s field coordinator.

According to an AP report, as of three hours after Monday’s game, Mets players hadn’t heard of Willie’s dismissal, and utility man Marlon Anderson opted not to comment until he “heard the news from a member of the team.”

News: BP on Peterson’s Status

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Earlier tonight, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus reported that Rick Peterson had been fired by the Mets.

However, in an update a few minutes later, he wrote that his sources were ‘incorrect,’ adding…

“My apologies for the error.  I consistently got “no comments” from Mets sources and do believe that Peterson remains in jeopardy.  However, that decision has not yet been made … or made public.”

…will has solid sources, and is ahead of the curve on a lot of inside information, so, i wouldn’t dismiss what he was getting at…in other words, my hunch is that peterson is in super-serious trouble at this point…we’ll see…

…either way, it’s official, i’m going off the rails on a crazy train

News: Willie, and Coaches, are in View

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

According to eyewitnesses, Willie Randolph, Tom Nieto, Sandy Alomar, Jerry Manuel, Rick Peterson and Howard Johnson have all been seen at the stadium in Anaheim as the Mets prepare to face the Angels.

you know what would stop this madness…if Omar Minaya would just come out and make a hard-and-fast statement about the future of this coaching staff…keyword being future, instead of obvious, in-the-now statements like, “We have coaches,” which is about as informative and comforting as, “We’re on Earth,” or, “I breath air.”…

Buzz: Zephyrs Prepared for Life after Obie

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

Last night, Omar Minaya was peppered with questions from reporters on the current job status of Willie Randolph.

This morning in the Daily News, Adam Rubin wrote that Randolph could survive the first round of firings, while citing a team insider as saying, “I think the coaches are in trouble. That may be the compromise for now.”

Over the weekend, multiple reports indicated that Ken Oberkfell and Dan Wharthen, from Triple-A New Orleans, could replace Tom Nieto and Rick Peterson on the coaching staff.

…in fact, from what i can gather, the Zepyhrs have already begun to plan for life after oberkfell and warthon, and are ready to see their coaches leave in an eventual promotion

i can’t remember the last time i heard a bad word about obie…i had the chance to interview him back in 2005, and i remember him being a tough-guy, salt of the earth type of talker…it would be interesting to see how he would play in New York City

“Don’t get me wrong,” Oberkfell told me in 2005, “I enjoy the Minor Leagues, and I love what I do, but there’s no question, my goal is to get to the Major Leagues.”

For more on Oberkfell, check out this recent post at Hot Foot.

By the way, speaking of the B’Mets, the Press & Sun Bulletin is doing a are giving you the chance to win four tickets to any regular-season, non-fireworks B-Mets home game.

Note: Peterson and HoJo in the Crosshairs

by Matthew Cerrone on June 3rd, 2008 at 2:51 pm

In his recent report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes that Howard Johnson and Rick Peterson, in addition to Willie Randolph, could all be in jeopardy if the team goes in to another ‘tailspin.’

…i go back and forth on peterson…on one hand, he’s very good at what he does when he has a pitcher who will listen to him…that said, he seems to struggle with the pitcher who doesn’t buy in to his philosophys…on one hand, it would be nice to have a pitching coach who could recognize each pitcher’s strengths and work with him to get the most of the arm…on the other hand, if that pitcher buys in to what peterson is selling it’s hard to argue with the results

…i wish the answer could be as easy as only acquiring pitchers who fit peterson’s mold…however, in this market, you take what you can get

Rosenthal also writes about the upcoming draft, the trade deadline, the Reds, the Rays, the availability of Zack Grienke, and the status of free-agent 1B Scott Hatteberg, who, according to Rosenthal, the Mets like, but who ‘have no place for another left-handed hitting first baseman as long as they remain committed to Carlos Delgado.’

Buzz: Could Peterson be First To Go

by Matthew Cerrone on May 2nd, 2008 at 2:54 pm

In the Daily News, Adam Rubin wonders if, should the Mets decide to fire some one, could Rick Peterson be the first to go.

According to Rubin, “There was high-level disenchantment with Peterson at the end of 2007, enough so that his job status was briefly murkier than Randolph’s.”

…well, what goes up, must go down

by the way, High-Level Disenchantment may be my favorite of the Smashing Pumpkins albums

Watch: Rick Peterson talk Pitching

by Matthew Cerrone on January 22nd, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Last on SNY’s Mets Stove Report, Rick Peterson talked about the way pitchers prepare in the off-season for spring straining, which you can watch by clicking the play button below…

…i’d love to say i learn about pitching when rick speaks, but i don’t for two reasons: 1) he uses so many stats and metaphors, i struggle to keep up, and 2) i’m completely distracted by his hair…seriously, what is going on there…

…it doesn’t matter if i get distracted, though, as long as he keeps communicating with his pitchers, that’s all that matters…

Also on SNY’s Mets Hot Stove, Newsday’s Ken Davidoff and FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal talked about five concerns that face the Mets as they head to Spring Training, which you can watch by clicking .

Buzz: Peterson Is Safe

by Regis Courtemanche on October 4th, 2007 at 5:22 pm

In an article for the Daily News, Adam Rubin cites a team insider who says that pitching coach Rick Peterson’s job is safe.

Rubin also notes that turnover in the coaching staff is expected.

…i never suspected that the jacket’s job was in jeopardy, despite all of the pitching woes this season…
