Quote: Cancel was Brain Dead

by Matthew Cerrone on August 4th, 2008 at 7:32 am

Yesterday, with the Mets down by just one run in the third inning, Robinson Cancel was thrown out trying to steal third base, with David Wright at the plate facing a left-handed pitcher, against whom Wright is batting .387.

Jerry Maunel, on Cancel, while speaking to reporters following yesterday’s game:

“He was brain dead or something, something was wrong with him right there.  He’s probably one of our more intelligent players, and, like I said, he’s brain something got crossed up there and he decided to take off.  But, he’s a better player than that and he knows that’s not a good situation to run in.”

it happens…it shouldn’t, but it does…this was basically just one example, though glaring, of the lack of execution and focus that ran rampant among the team the entire weekend, whether at the plate, in the bullpen or on the base paths

Note: Cancel is a Smart Player

by Mike Nichols on July 25th, 2008 at 9:00 am

With the game tied in the bottom of the eighth inning, Robinson Cancel reached first base on a single.  He advanced to second on a sac-bunt.  Endy Chavez lined out on a quick rip to the pitcher.  David Wright was intentionally walked, and Carlos Delgado than ripped a double in to the left-field corner to drive in two runs.

Manuel, on Cancel, and whether he is starting to take to being a pinch hitter:

“Cancel is a good baseball player.  There are a number of positions he can play.  I haven’t exposed him yet to those positions, but the one good thing about him is that I know when he comes to the plate it’s going to be a quality at bat.  He’s a very, very professional hitter and he doesn’t run bad either.”

Including catcher, Cancel has played in the outfield, first and third base throughout his minor league career.

…i’ve been highly critical of the Mets need to carry three catchers, especially with their depleted outfield, but cancel has come up with clutch pinch-hits in his short tenure with the team…i’ll be interested to see if manuel ‘exposes’ cancel to those other positions as they move forward…

…added to by Matthew Cerrone

…as i wrote yesterday, the heads up base running by cancel in that play in the ninth should not be understated…he’s a smart player…he could so easily have anticipated endy’s liner going by the pitcher, and leaning towards third, which would had led to him being picked off and ending the inning with a double play…instead, he stayed poised, paused and hopped right back to second allowing the inning to continue, so delgado could drive home the go-ahead runs…

Note: Cancel Makes Willie look Good for a Minute

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2008 at 7:34 am

During last night’s win against the Rangers, the Mets had the bases loaded in the sixth inning, with the score tied, and Pedro Martinez stepping to the plate, who had thrown 92 pitches and allowed just one earned run.

Willie Randolph pulled Martinez, and instead chose to use Robinson Cancel, who last had a major league hit in 1999.

The Shea crowd let out a raucous boo in response to Randolph’s decision, but Cancel singled to center field, driving in Carlos Beltran and Damion Easley with the game’s deciding runs.

Randolph, on the crowd reaction, talking after the game:

“Well, you know, no matter what I do it’s going to go the other way anyway.  So, you know, I wasn’t concerned about that.  I mean, they like me for a second and then they don’t.  So, that’s the way it goes.  Fans are that way.  I’m just trying to win a ballgame.  It was one of those iffy calls for me, because Pedro was throwing the ball great, but I just felt like we had to take the opportunity to take a crack at it – and, I guess, Cancel made me look good for a minute.”

Following the game, Cancel talked with SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt in front of the team’s dugout, but Ramon Castro interrupted the interview by slamming a handful of shaving cream in to Cancel’s face, which you can watch in the following video clip:
