Buzz: Potential Bidding War for Halladay

by Michael Baron on November 29th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

In a report in today’s Daily News, Anthony McCarren and Bill Madden suggest that a bidding war is on tap between the Yankees and Red Sox for Roy Halladay.

…interesting how the Mets aren’t mentioned at all here, yet i think they have the money and the prospects to get a deal done for Doc, and they were the one’s that swooped in and landed Johan Santana two years ago over these two clubs…not that one has anything to do with the other, but it’s possible that the Mets are quietly pursuing Doc at the moment…

McCarren and Madden believe that for the Yankees to acquire Halladay, the centerpiece of the deal would have to be Jesus Montero, who scouts believe can hit 40 home runs in the Major Leagues, and would also likely have to part with another prospect such as Austin Jackson and either Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain.

…one thing that i do know is the Yankees do an outstanding job at hyping up their prospects…Montero did have a good season for single-A Tampa, but he is just 18 and has a long way to go…

On the flip side, McCarren and Madden wonder if the Yankees would be willing to part with such talent and then sign Halladay to a five year extension in the range that both Johan Santana and CC Sabathia signed for, and potentially be paying both Halladay and Sabathia $46 million when both are over 34 years of age.

…it’s the same reservation i have with the Mets acquiring him…it’s a scary proposition to be paying Halladay the bulk of the contract after age 36…if he would be willing to take a shorter term contract, say in the five year range with an option based on merit, i’d be somewhat more comfortable…

…the one thing that Boston and both New York teams need to consider is this very problem…the question isn’t how he will perform in the next three seasons, it’s how he will perform in the seasons that follow and whether or not he will be effective, let alone productive…when it comes to talent that Doc possesses, i’m not really concerned that he will flame out all of a sudden, but the risk, at that dollar amount, has to be considered for anyone that wants to acquire him…

Buzz: Halladay Would Approve Trade to Yankees

by Michael Baron on November 28th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun says Roy Halladay would waive his no-trade clause to pitch for the Yankees.

Although Halladay and his agent, Greg Landry have not publicized the list of teams he would go to, Elliott says that according to a Major League source, “…Halladay has told the Jays he’ll approve a trade to the Yankees.”

the road block in such a deal, as with any team, is the players that the Blue Jays would get, and i wonder how enticed the Jays are by the players the Yankees have to offer…

Elliott says the Red Sox and the Angels are also in the mix, and on Wednesday the Daily News reported the Red Sox are putting on a full-court press for Halladay, which you can read here.

…i still believe the Mets have enough prospects to land Doc, but i think the stumbling block in the deal will be Doc himself as i have to wonder, given the team’s instability, whether or not he would want to join the Mets and whether or not he believes the team can win in the near future…he certainly would help to restore credibility to the organization and he would undoubtedly make them better in the short term, but is that enough for Doc…

…from an investment standpoint, the Mets would have the two best pitchers in baseball, while paying them close to $60 million per year, and at the same time, it would cost the team the mother load in prospects, and my biggest fear is that it won’t be enough, making me gun shy of such a trade…

Buzz: Halladay Doesn’t Want to Sign with Blue Jays

by Michael Baron on November 21st, 2009 at 3:01 pm

In a report in today’s New York Post, George A. King III says Roy Halladay does not want to sign a contract extension with the Blue Jays, and intends to test free agency.

Blue Jays President Paul Beeston told King:

“We would like to sign him, he is an original Blue Jay and we have never had a pitcher as good as him…but he is not inclined to sign with us.”

…if this is the case, then i expect he will be dealt this winter, and i expect the Mets to get heavily involved if they haven’t done so already…

…i am weary of bringing in Halladay although i wouldn’t complain if the Mets had a 1-2 punch of Johan Santana and Doc for the next few years…the back end of the contract extension he would want worries me…

King says if the Blue Jays intend to trade Halladay, that it will be a slow moving process, and says that just a handful of teams have the ability to take on Halladay’s next contract.

Meanwhile, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com says Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos would be willing to trade Halladay to a team in the American League East.

…i expect the Yankees and Red Sox to be in heavy pursuit of Doc no matter what, but i figure that any team in the mix, including the Mets, has the financial ability to sign him to an extension, so it becomes a competition of which club has better prospects as far as a trade is concerned and i wonder where the Mets stack up on that front…

…i believe the Mets have the prospects to get a deal done, and i think they would be willing to commit financially as well, but if Doc wants to win now, i have to wonder, given the Mets lost 92 games this past season, whether or not he would be interested in joining the Mets…

Buzz: Mets and Halladay, Holliday

by Michael Baron on November 10th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Ken Davidoff, in a post to his blog for Newsday, says that the Mets will speak with the Blue Jays about a deal for Roy Halladay.

According to Davidoff, the Mets know they are not the favorites.

…i’ve been saying all along that i believe the Mets have the prospects to deal for Halladay, but i wonder if he would waive his no-trade clause to come…they also have to see how the market plays out for Halladay, and i think the Mets will play their hand in this much like they did with the Twins and the Johan Santana deal in that they will wait and hope that the price comes down to the point that they can still retain some of their top prospects in such a deal…

In addition, Davidoff says the Mets will meet with Scott Boras before the end of the General Manager’s meetings tomorrow about Matt Holliday.

…a lot has been said about the Mets feeling that the prices for the premier free agents are too high for them, but as Matt said, it’s only the beginning November, and i’m the Mets have a number in mind and i am sure it is a high one, but the issue right now is probably the contract length, and not so much dollars, but as i said, it’s the beginning of November and i would never expect the Mets to dive head first into this…

…i think some key questions is whether or not the Mets could afford both of these players, and whether or not they would ultimately budge on the length of the contract…however i would be weary of paying either of these players the bulk of the money owed in these contracts after the age of 35…that said, much like the contract for Pedro Martinez, i think they should just deal with the back end of the contract when it comes…

Buzz: The NL East

by Michael Baron on November 10th, 2009 at 8:34 am

Jim Salisbury, in a report for the Philadelphia Inquirer, says that while Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. is focused on strengthening the bullpen, they are also looking to upgrade their starting rotation.

Yesterday, at the GM Meetings in Chicago, Amaro told reporters his priorities are third base, bullpen and bench.

However, Salisbury says the Phillies are ‘very much in the picture to make a run at Roy Halladay,’ though there isn’t a lot of room for the Phillies to take his salary on.

…needless to say, if the Phillies acquire halladay, that’s bad news for the Mets…i would like to see the Metscdo whatever it takes to keep halladay out of Philadelphia… the Mets certainly have the financial advantage over the Phillies, but the question is: can they match their package talent wise…

For more on the Phillies and Halladay, check out Salisbury’s report, here.

Meanwhile, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution says that the Braves are trying to work out a contract extension with Javier Vazquez.

Joe Capozzi, in a post to his blog for the Palm Beach Post feels that Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla will get traded by the winter meetings in December.

Capozzi also says that the Marlins are not going to be spending that much as they are preparing a multi-year offer for ace Josh Johnson.

Finally, Bill Ladson, in a post to his blog All Nats All the Time, says that according to Interim Manager Jim Riggleman, the club will decide on their manager after the General Manager’s Meetings.

Buzz: Blue Jays Could Trade Halladay

by Michael Baron on November 8th, 2009 at 10:37 am

In a report for MLB.com, Jordan Bastian says the Blue Jays might consider trading ace Roy Halladay.

According to Bastian, new Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos said that the Blue Jays still want to keep Halladay but said:

“…I think I have to be open-minded to anything that can make this ballclub better going forward and better for the long-term.”

With regards to Halladay, Anthopoulos told reports:

“…I think he stressed that his timeline for winning and ours may not mesh and may not match.”

…first off, i have to believe that Halladay is going to be traded this winter, as i think the Blue Jays  can maximize their return on him now, rather than in July…second, i think the price for Halladay has come down since the Blue Jays  failed to deal him this past summer…of course, i think that any deal would still cost a ton of prospects and a young, major league-ready pitcher, and while i think the Mets may have the prospects to deal, i am not so sure they have a major league pitcher that is attractive for the Blue Jays right now

…another factor in play here is that Halladay has a full no-trade clause, so i have to wonder if, at this point in time, he would waive that no trade clause to come to the Mets…

Halladay is entering the final year of a three year $40 million deal, and is due $15,750,000 in 2010.

Buzz: Roy Halladay may be Staying Put

by Matthew Cerrone on July 31st, 2009 at 11:22 am

Update, 11:22 am:

According to MLB.com, talks between the Rangers and Blue Jays regarding RHP Roy Halladay ‘appear to have broken off,’ as the two sides haggle over top pitching prospect Derek Holland.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post talked with Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi who believes Halladay will still be in Toronto following today’s 4 pm trade deadline.

…like i said last week, the buzz had been either the Phillies get halladay, or nobody gets halladay… at least not until the off season, when, although his value may be less, more teams can be involved because they’ll have the freedom to move around payroll and negotiate a contract extension… the Phillies seemed to be the only team willing to meet j.p.’s ‘wow factor,’ and they instead moved on to Cliff Lee

Original Post, 10:18 am:

Yesterday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com said the Rangers and Blue Jays were in talks regarding RHP Roy Halladay, which team president Nolan Ryan confirmed to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Buzz: Halladay and Kazmir and the Rangers

by Michael Baron on July 28th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

Update, 3:20 pm:

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Boston Red Sox have made a “strong offer” for Halladay.

The Red Sox reportedly offered Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden and Ryan Westmoreland  for Halladay.

Original Post:

In a post to his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman is reporting that the Texas Rangers have entered the Roy Halladay sweepstakes.

Sherman notes that the Rangers have two stumbling blocks when it comes to completing a trade for Halladay.

One of the stumbling blocks, according to Sherman, is that the Rangers aren’t sure they want to give up three of their best five or six prospects in a deal, a requirement from the Blue Jays.

The other issue is money and the Blue Jays will not take Vincente Padilla’s $7 million contract in a deal.

Sherman also reports that the Rangers recently turned down a deal for Scott Kazmir, with the Mets being only mildly interested in a reunion.

Buzz: Jays say Slim Chance that Halladay gets Traded

by Matthew Cerrone on July 27th, 2009 at 10:39 am

Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi told Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com that the chances of trading Roy Halladay are ‘very slim.’

Yesterday, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com said the Blue Jays also rejected Philadelphia’s offer of JA Happ, and prospects Michael Taylor, pitcher Carlos Carrasco and SS Jason Donald.

According to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, the Jays asked the Angels for pitcher Joe Saunders, SS Erick Aybar, 3B Brandon Wood and an outfield prospect.

…at this point, any one who truly believes the Mets could have acquired halladay for Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese, Fernando Martinez and Ruben Tejada should realize that deal was never going to fly… no chance… obviously…

…for more on what i believe took place between the Mets and Jays, read what i wrote on Saturday, here

Buzz: Phillies Latest Offer for Halladay Rejected

by Michael Baron on July 26th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

In an article on ESPN.com, Jayson Stark is reporting that the Phillies latest offer of J.A. Happ, Michael Taylor, Carlos Carrasco and Jason Donald for Roy Halladay has been rejected by the Blue Jays.

At one point, Taylor, Carrasco and Donald were all on Philadelphia’s list of “untouchables”, none the less the Blue Jays had informed the Phillies that this proposal was “not going to work”.

Fore more details on this, check out Stark’s article.
