Update, 1:49 pm:
Jordan Bastian of MLB.com believes the Phillies rejected Toronto’s most recent proposal to acquire RHP Roy Halladay, as they are unwilling to part with either prospect Kyle Drabeck or AJ Happ.
Meanwhile, according to FoxSports.com, the Angels
have intensified their own efforts to trade for Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay.
Original Post:
In a post to Twitter this morning, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said he still believes Halladay will eventually be traded to the Phillies.
Heyman does not know of a timetable, but says, ‘no way he stays.’
Brian Costa of the Star-Ledger quotes Jerry Manuel as saying of the Phillies potentially getting Halladay, “It would be a huge move.”
…there has been a lot of ink spilled and a lot of talk radio chatter a lot of blog posts about rumors of the Mets rejecting a deal from the Blue Jays to get halladay…
…i have talked with people who know of both teams, people in the game, i have read every report, listened to experts on air, had
columnists call me directly, as well as team media people, an agent, and others, and here is what i truly believe went down:
My bet is Omar Minaya and Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi never talked one on one. Instead, their underlings likely reached out to one another, which is quite often what happens with most teams this time of year, simply to check in on who is available, who isn’t, etc. The Jays said Halladay can be had, as well as Alex Rios I am sure, and others, they asked if the Mets will trade Fernando Martinez, who they like a lot. The Mets said, ‘No, but others are available.’ The two sides reported back to their respective GMs, and nothing materialized from there because the Jays deduced that, without Martinez in a deal, the Mets were not a legit option.
…that’s my educated guess, from essentially reading the tea leaves… i could be totally wrong… it could have been a direct offer, like some have suggested… or not… we’ll never really know… but, if i had to bet on a chain of events, that would be it…
…in the end, i think it’s a moot point…. because, the Phillies match-up so well with what the Blue Jays need, and clearly have enough young talent to top any Mets package… so, while it’s interesting to discuss, i sense it never really mattered, not just for the Mets but for most teams…

MLB Home Run says MLB Network are reporting the Phillies may be close to a deal that will bring Roy Halladay from the Blue Jays to the Phillies.
…i have had MLB Network on, and do not see anything on their news scroll… but, halladay going to Philadelphia is seeming more and more likely every day… well, here’s to soon watching Johan Santana vs. Roy Halladay…
Update, 4:20 pm:
In a post to Twitter, MiLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo says, “I’m hearing Halladay to Philly is nowhere near being done; Not saying it doesn’t happen, but it’s not close.”
Meanwhile, also on Twitter, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus says a source told him there is a No. 32 jersey in the Phillies clubhouse.
Update, 5:03 pm:
Jon Heyman of SI.com says a deal is not close, but the Phillies still remain the favorites to acquire Halladay.
According to MLB.com, GM Ned Colletti said the Jays want two or three major-league pitchers from the Dodgers, as well as additional prospects.
Danny Knobler of CBS Sports says the Brewers are essentially no longer involved in talks for Halladay.
Tagged Roy Halladay |According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mets pulled out of talks with the Blue Jays regarding Roy Halladay when asked about OF Fernando Martinez.
…well, i think it’s safe to say the Mets will not be
acquiring haladay, if they are unwilling to part with martinez… personally, i am unsure… i mean, again, the thought of pairing halladay with Johan Santana, and a healthy lineup next season, Francisco Rodriguez in the bullpen, and keeping Brad Holt and Jennry Mejia is still quite appealing…
…by the way, from what i can gather, the Mets still love martinez and believe he will be a star… the thing is, so do the Jays, and other teams around the league, and, apparently, his performance, at 20 years old, this season for the Mets helped his case… i’d have thought it hurt it, but, apparently, this is why i am not a scout… the concern, however, seems to be that has still yet to play a long stretch of games, perform consistently well and stay healthy…
ESPN.com’s Peter Gammons said this morning on ESPN Radio that the Phillies remain the most likely team to acquire Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay.
Gammons said the Phillies have the opportunity to win three World Series in a row, with the chance to be considered the greatest team in Philadelphia sports history, and Halladay will help that happen.
Heyman also labels the Phillies as front-runners for Halladay, as well, though they’ll be expected to part with J.A. Happ or Kyle Drabek, Dominic Brown and Michael Taylor, among other prospects.

ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark told ESPN Radio that he still believes the Phillies have the best chance of acquiring Roy Halladay from the Jays, who are seeking young, major-league ready pitching and other top prospects in a deal.
…ummm, so, like, i don’t know, say, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese, Fernando Martinez and Ruben Tejada, perhaps…
…nevertheless, like i said the other day, from what i can tell, if he is traded, halladay will likely end up on the Phillies, because they match up best… at which point, if a deal is not worked out with the Phillies, the Jays will sooner keep him, sell a few more tickets, ride out the season, and then wrangle in more interested buyers during the off season when the club will be working to improve for 2010 anyway, making the whole overhaul easier to sell to their fans…
Tagged Roy Halladay |Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi told MLB.com he has set a July 28 deadline for a potential Roy Halladay deal.
However, he added, “I think at this point, it’s probably unlikely that we’ll trade Doc… As you get closer and closer to the deadline, no one’s
really stepped up yet… We’ve got to be highly motivated to move him, so we haven’t been highly motivated yet.”
According to Ricciardi, he does not want Halladay going in to his start on July 29 wondering if he will be traded.
By the way, from what I can tell, having talked with people connected to the team, representatives from the Mets had been in contact with the Blue Jays earlier this month, during which the team discussed Roy Halladay, among other players who might become available from Toronto.
However, much like Mike Francesa said on WFAN yesterday, no specific players or packages from the Mets were discussed.
…in other words, much like the case with most teams this time of year, i suspect team assistants, scouts, representatives, etc., not Omar Minaya and not J.P. Ricciardi, from both sides, were probably in contact to feel one another out, but no specific deal was discussed…
…yesterday i was convinced the Minaya-rejected-Halladay rumor had been pushed from toronto to try and bait the Phillies… however, now i’m convinced it came from the Mets, looking to pump up their own prospects… this way, if they do not make a trade, they can say, ‘These prospects are good, I mean, we wouldn’t even trade them for Halladay,’ as if that makes any sense…
…that said, i would love to know if the Mets at least asked about Alex Rios, who i still believe would be a good fit for Citi Field…
In early July, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com said the Jays were listening to offers for Rios, who is hitting .264 with 10 HR, and will earn $60 million over the next five seasons.
In late June, Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail said the Jays will essentially give away Rios and Vernon Wells, in an effort to cut payroll.

In case you missed it, last night, Jon Heyman of SI.com said Mets GM Omar Minaya rejected a deal from Blue Jays GM JP Riccardi for RHP Roy Halladay, in return for OF Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and 17–year-old SS Ruben Tejada.
Later, in a post to Twitter, ESPN’s Keith Law said Heyman’s report is ‘bogus,’ having been ‘shot down by multiple sources.’
This afternoon, Law was a guest on 1050 ESPN Radio, while Heyman was a guest on WFAN in New York.
…before joining ESPN, law spent four years with the Blue Jays as a special assistant to the general manager…
Heyman told WFAN he stands by his report, saying the Mets flat-out rejected the deal offered to them by the Blue Jays.
However, during his discussion with ESPN, Law said the Jays would never present a deal to the Mets without asking for 19–year-old Double-A RHP Jenrry Mejia, who is now considered the team’s top pitching prospect.
…personally, i still believe this story was pushed from toronto to try and bait the Phillies in to parting with Kyle Drabek…
…it seems to me, the best way to spook the Phillies would be to make them think the Mets could have halladay at any moment…

Tagged Roy Halladay |Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes
the Mets and Yankees are not seriously pursuing Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay.
Sherman quotes a Toronto team official as saying there is ‘absolutely nothing’ going on with the Blue Jays and Mets, and that there is no truth to Jon Heyman’s report in SI.com that said Omar Minaya rejected a four-player deal to get Halladay.
…of course, this will not stop people from assuming he did, thus slamming him for rejecting a deal that never occurred…
…also, i love those old Blue Jays hats…
To learn what the Blue Jays are asking in return for Halladay, scroll to the end of Sherman’s post.
…frankly, the more i look around today, from what I can tell, the Mets are still trying to acquire young position players who are good, not great, under contract with a ton of potential, and who are arbitration eligible, like the case with Jeff Francoeur… and they are not looking to bring on a rent-a-player, like Matt Holliday; or even Roy Halladay, who is a free agent following 2010…
Speaking of young players, under contract…
According to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com, Indians GM Mark Shapiro said he has been ‘extremely busy and active,’ though he has ‘zero idea’ if he will make a deal before the July 31 Trade Deadline.
In the end, Castrovince believes Victor Martinez, Cliff Lee, Jhonny Peralta and Ryan Garko are more likely to be traded in the off season.
Tagged Roy Halladay |In case you missed it, last night, Jon Heyman of SI.com said Mets GM Omar Minaya rejected a deal from Blue Jays GM JP
Riccardi for RHP Roy Halladay, in return for OF Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and 17–year-old SS Ruben Tejada.
However, today, in a post to Twitter, ESPN’s Keith Law says the trade rumor is ‘bogus,’ having been ‘shot down by multiple sources.’
Similarly, I talked with a baseball person in Philadelphia, an agent, and two people connected to the Mets, and all four believe Minaya would have accepted such a deal had it been actually presented to him, i.e., maybe the Jays and Mets talked, but no hard offer was made.
I mean, I know I would have done it; and, according to a recent poll, 75 percent of people who read MetsBlog.com would have done the deal as well.
What’s more, in the Daily News, Adam Rubin writes, “Ricciardi ought to be fired on the spot for proposing it. And Minaya ought to be fired for rejecting it.”
Yet, the report is out there…
The thing is, I believe Heyman is great at what he does, he’s not senationalistic, and he’s trusted and respected all across the sport.
So, I’m left confused, wondering what this all means…
I wonder if Riccardi leaked this to spook the Phillies, who some baseball insiders feel are the only legitimate suitor for Halladay?
I mean, how better to milk the Phillies for top prospects than for Riccardi to make it seem like the Mets could get Halladay at any moment?
On the other hand, if Halladay-to-Philadelphia is inevitable, how better for Minaya and Riccardi to get the Phillies to overpay then to make it seem like the Mets could easily be involved?
Or, maybe the Mets are trying to raise the value of their own prospects by suggesting Niese, Parnell and Martinez are worth more than Halladay?
Or, perhaps Minaya did reject it, just like Heyman said, and, instead, is still working with Riccardi on something more expansive, which could be why he would not confirm or deny the report when asked about it yesterday?
Who knows? The point is, nothing is ever as simple as it seems…
In any case, we’ll find out at some point in the next 10 days, at which point it will be a lot more easier to judge this.
Tagged Omar Minaya, Roy Halladay |Update, 6:27 am:
Omar Minaya told reporters prior to last night’s game that he will continue to talk other clubs, when asked if he will be a buyer at the July 31 Trade Deadline.
“We’re gonna continue to talk to other clubs and see if there’s a fit and we’re gonna try to improve the team,” he said. “Does that make us buyers? Yes, we’re gonna continue to talk to clubs.”
Minaya would not comment on the rumored deal, below, about rejecting an offer for Halladay.
Original Post:
Jon Heyman of SI.com believes the Mets rejected a deal from the Jays for RHP Roy Halladay, in return for OF Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and 17–year-old SS Ruben Tejada.
“The Mets responded with a resounding no,” according to Heyman.
…that is pretty steep… it is… that said, Johan Santana and Roy Halladay is just so damn tempting… i mean, think about that for a second… of course, it means nothing if the Mets can’t score… but, let’s assume this season is a wash, next season you’d have a reloaded offense, two aces in a pitcher’s park and K-Rod in the back of the pen, all while hanging on to Brad Holt and Jennry Mejia… like i said, tempting… plus, i wonder if Alex Rios could have been put in there some how… hmmm…
…i initially said i could go either way on this… however, now that i think about it, i think i would have done it… regardless of a contract extension… i mean, being able to keep holt and mejia, and Wilmer Flores, among others, and pairing up the two best pitchers in the league is just too much to resist… not to mention, it would re-engage fans enough this season to save ratings and ticket sales, etc., while building hype for next year… oh well…

Tagged Roy Halladay |Update, 2:10 pm:
According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Phillies may be less inclined to trade for Jays RHP Roy Halladay if they continues to expand their lead in the National League East.
…great… glad we could help, toronto… ugh…
Meanwhile, Jon Heyman of SI.com believes Halladay would prefer to play for either the Phillies, Cardinals, Red Sox or Yankees, based on criteria from Halladay’s friend.
Original Post, 12:43 pm:
The Tigers, Twins, Red Sox, Phillies, Rangers and Brewers all sent scouts to check out Halladay’s last start, according to MLB.com and FoxSports.com.
