According to Nick Cafardo in a report for the Boston Globe, citing a team official, the Mets would be willing to part with RHP Scott Schoeneweis if they could obtain an outfielder.
Cafardo, who provides a ton of information regarding the trade market, believes the Tigers could be interested in Schoeneweis.
That said, the Tigers are looking for help in the bullpen, reports Jon Paul Morosi in the Detroit Free Press.
In a post to his blog during March for ESPN.com, Jayson Stark wrote: “The Mets love Marcus Thames, but they’re not going to trade Aaron Heilman for him.”
Thames, 31, is batting .250 against left-handed pitching and .269 against right-handed pitching, while hitting 20 HR and 43 RBI in 70 games for the Tigers this season, during which he has played left field, right field and first base.
…like SNY’s Ted Berg just said to me, ‘Thames is like Adam Dunn, but without the walks,’ which is a good point…
…my problem with thames, for all of his power, is that he is so inconsistent…his year-in and year-out stats are all over the road…he could hit 20 home runs in 60 days for the Mets, or hit five…neither would surprise me…
…personally, i just don’t think it would make sense to weaken the bullpen for a .260 hitter…unless, of course, the Mets can upgrade the bullpen, from schoeneweis, in a separate deal, and then get thames, who can play every day in right, allowing them to solidify their bench…
For what it’s worth, yesterday in a post to Baseball Prospectus, John Perrotto wrote that the Mets have made trade proposals for A’s RHP Huston Street and Rockies RHP Brian Fuentes, while also checking in on M’s LHP Arthur Rhodes and Rangers LHP Eddie Guardado.
Additionally, the Mets have also expressed interest in Jays LHP Brian Tallet and Giants LHP Jack Taschner, according to Dan Graziano in a recent report for the Star-Ledger.
…hmm, so maybe the play is to trade for a guy like tallet or tashner, and then trade show for an outfielder, like thames…
…i’m always skeptical of these ‘moving parts’ type rumors, but who knows…
Tagged Scott Schoeneweis |Scott Schoeneweis entered last night’s game with the score tied at one in the bottom of the ninth.
However, he walked the first two batters of the inning, then got an out, intentionally
walked Kevin Kouzmanoff to load the bases, and put a force at any bag, but he hit Paul McAnulty with the first pitch thrown to end the game and give San Diego a walk-off win.
McAnulty entered the game hitless in two at bats against left-handed pitching this season.
Willie Randolph, regarding Schoeneweis, talking to reporters after the game:
“You can’t walk the leadoff guy. He had a nice succession of lefties I thought we were going to get outs on. He didn’t get the job done, period. Simple as that. And obviously you can’t hit the guy to walk in the winning run. Scottie wasn’t on his game tonight and it showed.”
Schoeneweis, on his outing, while speaking to reporters:
“(That last pitch) just got away, just got away. You know, I don’t know, it just got away.”

Schoeneweis had not allowed a run in six straight appearances, but has now allowed four earned runs in his last .2 innings of work, raising his ERA from 1.17 to 2.66.
…i’m not too worried about schoeneweis…he’s allowed to have a bad outing or two, and up until this point he had been going pretty good that…that said, it’s his control that has seemingly slipped the last two outings, though i know he thinks he was getting squeezed by the umps…again, i’m not worried, but this certainly something to keep an eye on…
…also, for what it’s worth, with all those lefties coming to the plate, and with Pedro Feliciano out of the game, i too would have stuck with schoeneweis, instead of using Aaron Heilman, who had been warming up in the bullpen…i mean, if you wanted a pitching change because you knew schoeneweis was going to hit a batter with the bases loaded, well, then hat’s off to you…also, use your powers for something other than baseball…

Scott Schoeneweis will be a guest today at 12:15 during WFAN’s mid-day show.
Schoeneweis has not allowed a run 20 of his 23 appearances this season.
…i’m happy for schoeneweis…this is a tough town, as it should be…we expect a lot…he struggled, the fans booed, but he took it on, shook it off, and is now pitching well…so, good for him…
Tagged Scott Schoeneweis |In a win last night against the Marlins, Scott Schoeneweis, Aaron Heilman, Billy Wagner and Duaner Sanchez pitched six innings of relief, allowing just one run and one hit.
Heilman has not allowed a run in his last two appearances, during which he has struck out seven while giving up just one hit in four innings.
…sanchez was throwing hard, too…lots of fastballs…lots of life…he allowed a home run to Alfredo Amezaga, who is hardly a power hitter…amezaga swung through a hard, inside fastball on the previous pitch, but got a hold of it moments later…other than the result, sanchez looked great the entire time…
Schoeneweis, on the team, as quoted by the Daily News:
“You could pack it in and pout or you could join together and try to pick each other up and play inspired baseball. And I think the last couple of nights I think we’ve played that way. Hopefully it carries over.”
By the way, this season, the Mets three left-handed reliever, Schoeneweis, Feliciano and Wagner, have a combined for a 1.37 ERA, while striking out 45 batters in 59.2 innings pitched.
…thanks to adam k for the math…
Tagged Scott Schoeneweis |Scott Schoeneweis was rushed to a Greenwich, CT hospital yesterday due to abdominal pain.
Schoeneweis, as quoted by Anthony Rieber at Newsday:
“I thought I was going to die. I was in dire straits. I looked at my arm and my arms were like blue and I was like, ‘I need to do something. I just can’t lay here.”
He was treated with IV fluids and anti-nausea medicine, and was able to make it to Shea before last night’s game.
…very scary stuff, but glad to see show is ok since we need him more than ever…before the season, who would have thought i’d be saying that, but he has been spectacular so far…
Tagged Regis Courtemanche, Scott Schoeneweis |During the SNY telecast of last night’s Mets game, Kevin Burkhardt spoke about Scott Schoeneweis‘ torn tendon, inferring that the injury may have had something to do with his poor 2007 numbers. It was further suggested that Schoneweis was undeservedly booed by fans for
his poor performances — and perhaps he should have been lauded for pitching through the injury.
I’m not for booing anyone, but have to disagree with supporting Schoeneweis for pitching on a bad leg. The injury severely affected his performance — to the detriment of the team.
With Pedro Feliciano pitching well in 2007, Schoeneweis was expendable. His role could have been filled by another arm in the organization — or J.C. Romero, who was released on June 19. Imagine how 2007 might have turned out if Romero (1.50 ERA vs. Mets in 10 games) was in New York and not Philadelphia?
Tagged Scott Schoeneweis |Scott Schoeneweis currently has an ERA of just 1.50, and has not allowed a run in 14 of his 16 appearances this season.
Anthony Rieber at Newsday writes:
“Scott Schoeneweis was not only not booed yesterday when he came off the mound after a successful outing, he was actually cheered. It’s quite a turnaround for the reliever, who was booed at the home opener during pregame introductions.”
…i must admit that i didn’t notice just how good schoeneweis has been this year, as most of what i hear is about who the fans are booing, and how the bats have been slumping…however, at the game yesterday, scott got a very nice welcome from the fans when he entered, so i’m glad someone’s paying attention…

Willie Randolph told reporters yesterday that Orlando Hernandez will throw another simulated game, before pitching in a live game.
…meaning, we should not expect to see him on a mound in a real game until the last week of spring training…which is why i still believe he’ll remain in St. Lucie, when camp breaks for opening day…
Brian Schneider is back on the sidelines with a tight, right hamstring. However, he told WFAN yesterday that he expects to be back in action when the team returns home this weekend.
Scott Schoeneweis is battling a tight hamstring as well, though it has yet to keep him from pitching.
Luis Castillo told reporters on Tuesday that he intends to play at home on Saturday.
Tagged Orlando Hernandez, Scott Schoeneweis |According to Adam Rubin in the Daily News, the Mets are shopping Scott Schoeneweis and Jorge Sosa.
In addition to considering several reasons why the team is looking to move the two relief picthers, while projecting what the pitching staff will look like if they do, Rubin writes:
“I wonder, too, if the Mets might relent and actually put El Duque in the bullpen. They’ve adamantly said no, and Hernandez has said he doesn’t intend to be there, but maybe his foot will only allow him to pitch shorter spurts.”
…i had been saying something similar all winter, in that putting el duque in the pen makes it easier to throttle his cartoonish health situation…plus, he can always return to being a starter…
……at any rate, as for actually moving show and sosa, i am very interested to see if any team bites…and if they do, why…
Tagged Scott Schoeneweis |According to the Associated Press, MLB may suspend players implicated by the Albany County district attorney’s office for receiving banned substances.
Baltimore Orioles OF Jay Gibbons, Toronto Blue Jays 3B Troy Glaus and Mets LHP Scott Schoeneweis have been implicated in the investigation.
In his last 25 appearances this past season, Schoeneweis was 0–0 with 4.02 ERA, while allowing 26 base runners through 20.1 innings pitched.
If you recall, Guillermo Mota was suspended for the first 50 games of last season for violating MLB’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
