Phil Hoops, in a post for Bleacher Report, analyzes Sean Green and his performance this past season, and whether or not the Mets should bring him back in 2010.
Hoops breaks down his performance on a month to month basis, and says that while he struggled early on, he performed real well after modifying his delivery and release point and that it might be worth bringing Green back in 2010 because he is a low risk option.
…i agree with Phil – i think that they should consider bringing him back, simply because if he is right, he can be solid against tough right handers…
…however, when he wasn’t right, he really created a hole…he did lose games simply by hitting a batter with the bases loaded and walked in the winning run, but there were times, especially towards the end of the year when he was real solid and at the very least, he deserves a look if other options don’t work out…
…i think that part of the problem with the Mets bullpen over the past few seasons is that they have been overused and over-managed…i think that they have a lot of specialists, designed to get either a tough lefty out or a tough righty out, and they get left in to face hitters that are likely to beat them up…
…the overuse stems from their starters inability to go deep into games, and repeated use day after day…i mean, Pedro Feliciano had an outstanding 2009 campaign, but he has pitched in 52 percent of the team’s games since the beginning of 2007 so the question i ask is when is all of that mileage going to catch up with pitchers like Feliciano…

Tagged Sean Green |Last night, with no outs, a runner on first and the game tied, Sean Green hit the first batter he faced, then walked Mark Reynolds to load the bases.
Following a double play, Green threw a wild pitch allowing the D-Backs to the score the go-ahead run.
…green was booed pretty hard after getting the final out, and walking from the mound to the dugout…
“I threw a fastball in the dirt and it got away,” Green explained. ‘My command was subpar, to say the least.”
Green had not allowed a run to score in each of his previous eight outings.
…Bobby Parnell was clearly unavailable, because he pitched in both games the day before during the double-header… Brian Stokes and Pedro Feliciano had already been used… Tim Redding is being held aside, i think, because he’s most likely going to start on Monday… this means, only Pat Misch or Francisco Rodriguez were available to pitch in relief of green… misch has not been good, allowing seven hits in his last three appearances… frankly, i, too, would have trusted green to get out of his own mess over misch… in other words, the only option was to use rodriguez, but it was a tie game at the time…
…manuel’s mistake, if he must be charged with one, would be using both feliicano and stokes in the seventh inning… in the end, the mistake is not on manuel using or sticking with green, it’s in green for not executing his pitches…
In case you missed it…

Yesterday, during a win against the Reds on Opening Day, Sean Green, J.J. Putz and Frankie Rodriguez pitched 3.1 innings and allowed no runs and no hits for two holds and a save.
…Omar Minaya had to be smiling yesterday, since this is exactly what he and his team had been projecting all season… green comes in with runners on, gets out of the inning, then eventually passes the ball to putz, who passes it off to rodriguez, turning it in to a six-inning game…
J.J. Putz, following yesterday’s game, said:
“If we can get 161 more of these kinds of games, I think everybody is going to be really happy.”
…nice… exactly… he knows us well already… because, if the bullpen blows the next two games, let’s say, the paranoia will again set it…
Jerry Manuel, speaking about the bullpen, following yesterday’s win, said:
“I think it’s very important that the guys we acquired come in and produce right away… To get into a close game and perform on Opening Day, I think that says a lot about the guys we acquired.”
According to the Elias Sports Beruea, “Last season, Mets relievers blew a major-league-high seven potential wins for Santana, who had won just one game in each of the last three seasons in which he pitched less than six innings.”
Johan Santana, speaking about the bullpen, said:
“If we’re able to do that throughout the whole season, we’re going to be in pretty good shape…. To see that, and get it out of the way in the first game, is definitely great for us. It brings our comfort level up.”
…getting to see the bullpen in action, and do well, i wonder how that will help to inspire the starting rotation, like santana, who can now be a bit more risky in situations, and not feel they must do it all themselves…

Tagged Sean Green |Ben Shpigel of the New York Times profiles Sean Green who the Mets acquired in the trade for J.J. Putz.
Shpigel writes, “Green projected as a more polished version of Joe Smith, who they sent to Cleveland in the three-team trade. Green’s sinker helped produce the eighth-best ground ball percentage among relievers who pitched in at least 50 games last season, [and] did not allow a home run to a right-handed hitter in 172 at-bats”
Mike Steffanos of Mike’s Mets is eager to see what Green can do, noting, “perhaps he can combine with [Pedro] Feliciano and give the Mets something close to what they had in 2006 when the southpaw combined effectively with Chad Bradford.”
…i actually think he looks a bit like bradford, but that’s just me…

St. Lucie, Kevin Burkhardt talked with Mets set-up men Sean Green and J.J. Putz.
…the two clearly have a sense of humor and a good rapport with one another from their days in Seattle… at the same time, they both want the ball, and they both want to win…
To watch Green and Putz talking with Burkhardt, click here.
Putz is infamous for sneaking up on teammates and hitting them in the face, on air, in the final moments of an interview, with a shaving cream pie.
In the show’s final moments last night, Putz sneaked back on set to slam Burkhardt in the face with his signature pie, which you can watch by clicking play below:
…excellent… you asked him about it one too many times, kevin… that’s awesome, man… you should be honored…
…the Mets were well aware of putz’s way, his attitude in the clubhouse, the way he keeps people loose and having fun, and it’s a big reason why he was acquired, because he it is believed he can have a positive impact on the clubhouse for a team that is often tight when playing under pressure…
…i don’t know that he’s the new Roger McDowell, but he’s close…
Tagged Sean Green, SNY |Keith Law of ESPN.com recaps the significant deals and free-agent signing form this year’s Winter Meeting with his rankings of the top 25 moves.
Dominating the Law’s top five are the Mets recent bullpen acquisitions – the signing of RHP Francisco Rodriguez and the trade for RHP J.J. Putz and RHP Sean Green.
Law ranks the acquisition of Putz as the better move, than the signing of Rodriquez, writing:
“If he’s fully healthy, he’s one of the most dominant late-game relievers around, with outstanding control and an out-pitch splitter. He’ll make more of a difference to the Mets’ bullpen than the other guy they acquired this week.”
Meanwhile, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com also provides a team-by-team recap of the recently concluded winter meetings.
