From what I can gather, the final section of Shea Stadium will likely come down towards the end of this week, or the start of next week.
Last week, I wrote, “The Mets should leave that one remaining section of Shea Stadium standing, just the wall, as a piece of art work in the parking lot. I think that’d be pretty cool.”
Typically, an equal number of readers e-mailed to say it was a stupid idea as e-mailed to say it was a great idea. I love when that happens.
Today, Adam, the Brooklyn Met Fan, said he likes the idea as well, writing, “Met fans would make the pilgrimage to our own wailing wall. A place to pay homage to our old friend and introduce our still unborn children to the place the Mets were (essentially) born.”
I realize there are probably all sorts of safety, logistical and construction reasons why this is not possible at this point in the demolition, not to mention it would be the city’s call, not the team’s, but it does not stop me from wishing it would happen, even though I know it won’t.

…man, these two are crazy… i would have been paranoid the entire time that the building would crumble upon me… this is probably why it’s a restricted area… nevertheless, it’s pretty interesting video, even though i assume these people would have found themselves in a ton of trouble had they been caught…

…i am hoping to be made aware of the day the stadium is coming down, as we get closer… from what i can gather, at their current pace, it will probably be some time towards the end of next week…

By the way, just a reminder…
On Saturday, tomorrow, January 31, at 12:00 pm, a group of Mets fans are organizing a final farewell at Shea Stadium, ‘to share stories and take photographs of what is left of the ballpark… This is not for a funeral, but a celebration.’
According to an e-mail from one the event’s organizers, the group will be meeting on the north side of the demolition site near Gate A, or what is left of Gate A.
If you’re on Facebook, and plan on attending, you can get more details by clicking here.

“Meet on the North side of the site, at the plaza facing the old traffic circle next to Northern Blvd,” one of the event’s planner said to me on e-mail.

According to an e-mail from one the event’s organizers, “There is no cost of course – and the day will include a walking tour around the Stadium one last time, with stories, photographs and much more.”

The Mets have sold all 49 luxury suites for Citi Field, as well as roughly 25,000 seats per game in season tickets, reports the Associated Press.
According to the report, “Single-game tickets for the 42,000-seat ballpark will not go on sale until early March.”
Speaking of stadiums…

Tagged Shea Stadium |I took a drive to Shea Stadium this morning, to see the demolition site first hand.
There is no way around it, it was tough to look at – especially the first moment, as I drove up and over from the Whitestone Bridge, only to see a dismantled shell of what once was. It put a pit in my stomach. The longer I drove around the job site, taking pictures and video, the more comfortable I got with the idea that, in a week or so, the building will be totally erased from existence. But, seriously, that first image, wow, it was difficult to digest. And, while pictures are one thing, seeing it in person is something totally different.
The following are five photographs that I took, followed by a short one-minute video from the demolition site:

…there had been talk that Shea Stadium would not be down enough to pave it over for parking by the time Citi Field opens roughly 3 months… but, word from the job site this week is that the majority of the building will be rubble by the end of next week, putting them on schedule for opening day…
