Last night, the Mets left 14 men on base and were 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
…this doesn’t concern me, yet… last season, the bigger issue was scoring early, then napping through the final six innings… this season, however, they are doing most of their scoring in the second half of the ball game, while leaving tons of men on base early on… the good news is, unlike last season, is that the runs are out there, or, the ‘ducks are on the pond,’ like David Wright likes to say… the bad news, they’re staying on the pond…
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, last night was first time since 1980 that the Mets left 14-or-more men on base in a one-run loss in a nine-inning game.
…hat tip to ESPN.com for the elias information…
Tagged Stats |Stat-genius Nate Silver, of Baseball Prospectus, ran the entire 2009 season through his super-terrific calculator, and
determined that the Mets will win the National League East by five games.
According to Silver, Jose Reyes will hit .309 with a .374 OBP, 15 HR, 73 RBI and 64 stolen bases, while Johan Santana will go 15–8 with a 3.14 ERA.
By the way, Silver projects Luis Castillo will have a .347 OBP in 448 plate appearances, while stealing 17 bases.
…i do not pretend to know how silver does what he does… as we’ve discussed before, i could not get past Algebra, and i took it twice… what i do know is, if castillo steals 17 bases and gets on base even that much, and starts in roughly 100 games or so, then something went very right, and so the Mets should win the division under such a rosy scenario… go nate, i hope you’re right…
Tagged Stats |Eric Simon at Amazin’ Avenue forwards some projected 2009 offensive stats from The Bill James Handbook.
Among the notable numbers:
David Wright will lead the team in nearly every category including home runs, batting average, OBP, and OPS.
Carlos Delgado will tie David Wright for the team lead in homers with 33.
Nick Evans will have a higher OPS than Jose Reyes but play in a third less games.
…it’s interesting because most of the numbers don’t vary too far from this year…not being very into sabermetrics myself, i’d like to know how they come up with these…
Eric provides post-stat commentary as well including:
“The Mets could do far worse than Fernando Tatis as a righty bat off the bench, Or: Sixteen words I couldn’t have fathomed writing a year ago.”
…the projections have started already…i know some people say these are worthless, but other than the giants, few things keep me going over the winter months so i appreciate them…
They also posted the projections for the Mets pitching staff as well which you can see here.

Stark writes:
“If all games ended after six innings, those NL East standings would look a whole lot different. If games were six innings, the Mets would be leading this division by 11½ games.”
“Thanks to the best closer in baseball this year, Brad Lidge, the Phillies are 75-0 when they lead after eight innings.”
Stark goes on to note that if all games were just eight innings long, the Mets lead in the East would be 6.5 games.
…as depressing as this whole situation has been, it’s interesting to see just how different things may have been if the bullpen had performed better…
…if this doesn’t show omar and co. what the team’s greatest area of attention is right now, nothing will…

MetsBlog reader Jason W. sent in a link to Hit Tracker Online, which, “determines the true distance a home run travels,” using several different metrics including atmospheric data, and initial trajectory.
According to the site, Carlos Delgado is listed second behind Adam Dunn in the “No Doubt” home run category. He is also currently fifth in the “Golden Sledgehammer” category which combines total home runs and distance.
It’s funny because the two farthest home runs I can remember being hit at Shea were by Dunn – who broke several lights on the out of town scoreboard – and Delgado.
I’m not sure how valid the site’s stats are, but it seems pretty well done. If nothing else, the entertainment value is high.
Tagged Regis Courtemanche, Stats |According to our old friend, DJ Short, while the Mets lead all of baseball in runs scored during the first six innings of the game, they are tied for last in the National League in runs scored from the seventh inning on.

Since June 16, Carlos Delgado is hitting .284 with 17 HR, 52 RBI and a 1.003 OPS. Prior to June 16, Delgado hit .241 with 9 HR, 32 RBI and a .696 OPS.
Why is the June 16 date significant? It was the day after Willie Randolph was fired as the Mets manager.
Although the stats may suggest Delgado stopped playing for Randolph, I highly doubt that was the case.
I believe it had more to do with Delgado finally recovering from the wrist surgery he had in 2006 and making adjustments to his batting stance than his perceived dislike of his former manager.
However, one could argue, it was more than just coincidence.
Tagged Stats, Willie Randolph |As noted during last night’s game, Jose Reyes is the first player in Major League history to have 10 HR, 20 2B, 10 3B and 30 stolen bases before the All Star break.
Reyes continued his slump that marred the second half of 2007 in April, hitting just .240 with 6 stolen bases, while walking only 9 times in 100 at-bats.
However, since May 1, Reyes is hitting .320 with a .396 OBP, 8 HR, 32 RBI and 26 SB.
…it’s a shame reyes was not named to the all star team, as he has put historic first half numbers and without question has better than both Miguel Tejada and Christian Guzman, who will represent the national league, along with Hanley Ramirez, at shortstop…
Tagged Mike Nichols, Stats |In last night’s game, both Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran homered off of Rockies pitching.
During the Mets’ nine-game winning streak, Carlos Beltran is batting .316 with three home runs, four stolen bases and 10 RBI. Beltran has also struck out only three times.
In that stretch, Carlos Delgado has a .361 batting average and a .439 on-base percentage. He has slugged two homers and his batting average has climbed 12 points in the month of July to .248.
…this streak has certainly been a team effort, but seeing delgado’s bat come alive has been a welcome surprise…
Tagged Regis Courtemanche, Stats |In their past five games, the Mets have only allowed four runs and 13 hits to their opposition.
They have also pitched three shutouts and the bullpen has not given up a run in 18 1/3 innings.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Mets are the first team since 1900 to allow three or fewer hits in five consecutive games.
Carlos Beltran, speaking about the team’s pitching, following yesterday’s win against the Giants:
“Our starting pitching has been great. We know we’re going to get six, seven strong innings and our bullpen is coming in and shutting the door on the opponents.”
…what hasn’t been going right lately…the team is having more fun, their confidence is back, and the vibe at Shea has certainly been much better these days…
…eight game winning streaks will do that of course…
