According to David Lennon in his blog for Newsday, Johan Santana will not start on Opening Day on April 6. Lennon writes:
The delay caused by the tightness in his left elbow is going to push him back to the fifth turn of that first week, which is Saturday, April 11, in Florida.
The Mets have not yet confirmed the report.
…update, 5:23 p.m.…
At the Daily News, Adam Rubin maps out Santana’s throwing schedule according to Dan Warthen, and states that Warthen “wouldn’t rule out an Opening Day start.”
…so it sounds like he’s OK, just a bit off his schedule… i don’t see why this is really that big of a deal unless he’s more hurt than anybody is letting on…
Tagged Ted Berg |The Cardinals beat the Mets today, 9-8, in Grapefruit League action in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The Mets tallied three runs in a second-inning rally off Cardinals starter Todd Wellemeyer that was highlighted by an RBI double from Ryan Church.
They added a run in the eighth on a Rob Mackowiak single.
Bobby Kielty brought home three more with a home run in the bottom of the ninth off the now-bearded Royce Ring, then Alex Cora singled home another, but the Mets’ rally fell short, and for the 47th consecutive year, all hope of a completely undefeated season was lost.
On the upside, Livan Hernandez got his fifth-starter campaign off on the right foot, throwing two perfect innings to start the game. Freddy Garcia, on the other hand, allowed four runs — two earned — on two hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning.
A few of the longshot lefties competing for a bullpen spot saw action. Veteran Tom Martin came in to relieve Garcia in the third and struck out the only batter he faced. Casey Fossum tossed two scoreless frames, allowing two hits and striking out two. Adam Bostick pitched an inning as well, allowing one run on one hit and three walks.
Righty Connor Robertson threw a perfect sixth for the Mets. Brandon Knight threw a significantly less-than-perfect eighth, allowing three earned runs on four hits before Rocky Cherry came on and allowed a run on three straight two-out hits in the ninth.

Tagged Ted Berg |The following video is of SNY’s New York Baseball Today: Hot Stove Edition, during which SNY.tv’s Ted Berg and Andrew Marchand from 1050 ESPN Radio discuss whether the Mets are interested in Bobby Abreu, and what the Yankees may be seeking in a deal for Xavier Nady:
In short, Marchand believes the Yankees are looking to acquire a young Triple-A player in a deal for Nady or Nick Swisher, though such a request may be difficult at this point.
Meanwhile, as of now, Marchand believes the Mets are not interested in Abreu, but, ‘the longer he stays out there, and the lower his price keeps going, he could become an option for the Mets, especially if they strike out on the pitching front.’

Tagged SNY, Ted Berg |Yesterday, Jerry Manuel was at the SNY studios to appear as a guest on Daily News Live, which you can check out here.
Prior to going on air, Ted Berg talked briefly with
Manuel, for an article you can read at SNY.tv, during which Manuel talks about Freddy Garcia, and other players signed by the Mets this off-season.
Berg was kind enough to send over a few questions and answers that did not make his article:
Ted Berg: How much input do you have, with Omar, on the offseason roster moves?
Jerry Manuel: I think, because of our communication during the season and immediately after the season — we kind of sit down and have a big get-together — we’re pretty much always on the same page. There’s a lot of input immediately after the season as to the needs and to prioritize those things. Then I sit back and let him do his thing.
Ted Berg: So you didn’t tell him anything about getting a left-handed hitting reserve outfielder this offseason? There’s no niche you’re looking to fill with Rob Mackowiak and Cory Sullivan?
Jerry Manuel: Not necessarily. I really think that, if we could find a right-handed bat — I’m more concerned with a right-handed bat than I am with the left-handed bat, but those are good players. Those are guys that help you create depth on your team. In the course of 162 games, that’s what you need. They could be an asset in that regard.
Ted Berg: What about Angel Pagan, have you heard anything about his health this offseason?
Jerry Manuel: I’ve heard he’s doing well. I heard he’s hitting and doing those things everyday.

Last night, SNY’s Ted Berg talked with Mets GM Omar Minaya for an interview on SNY.tv.
Here is a quick sample of their discussion, which I found most interesting – otherwise, to watch the entire four-minute interview, scroll down and click play…
Ted Berg: How do you balance the desire to put together a competitive team with the challenge of winning in the long haul?
Omar Minaya: Well, you have to do that, you have to balance that. It’s not so much about the players, it’s about the quality of the player you are giving up. You know, you have a lot of players in the system…
Ted Berg: Do you look down the road and say, ‘This is not a need now, but we’ve got to look at that for 2010, 2011?’
Omar Minaya: Yes, exactly. Like right now, what we’ve done with Robert Parnell and Jon Niese, I feel we’ve got some good young pitching, but we have some other guys who are gonna be free agents or not, so you want to be able to hold on to certain guys. When we traded for Johan Santana, we made a trade where we gave up three pitchers. And I just felt, this year, we couldn’t do that, because we had to hold off some of our starting pitcher who are better guys. It goes in cycles and where there is a surplus – you try to trade off of your surplus is what you try to do and you also have to look at years ahead, 2009, 2010, 2012. You know, we have some real good infielders right now, offensive players, position players, down at the lower levels, so that’s good to know. It goes in cycles, some years you have pitchers, but position players at the lower levels, and you kind of balance it out whenever you make trades.
Tagged Omar Minaya, SNY, Ted Berg |Mets GM Omar Minaya will join Gary Cohen and SI.com’s Jon Heyman as special guests during tonight’s Mets Hot Stove,
live at 7pm on SNY.
Meanwhile, in a column for SNY.tv, Ted Berg asks, “Is Omar Minaya using team’s resources in most effective way,” adding:
“Yes, Minaya has put together competitive teams, and for that he should get credit. But he’s put together competitive teams with monstrous payrolls, and too often he’s misread the markets or missed the big picture… Take for example the recent acquisition of Alex Cora… It’s $2 million, so you’ll tell me it’s a drop in the bucket, and to some extent, that’s true. But what if that $2 million is the difference between signing Ben Sheets and not signing Ben Sheets? Is it still a drop in the bucket then?”
Berg will be interviewing Minaya prior to tonight’s show for a video that will air tomorrow on SNY.tv.
