Read: Putz’s Option, Redding’s Future, Catching Situation

by Michael Baron on November 5th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News, points out that the option the Mets have on JJ Putz is for $9.1 million, and not for $8.6 million as had been previously reported due to a performance clause that was exercised prior to his trade to the Mets.

Rubin feels that there is no way the Mets can bring Putz back at either salary.

…i am leaning towards agreeing with Rubin at this point…at first i was on the fence because he can be a valuable but costly part of the bullpen, but i now think the money is better spent elsewhere, and as Rubin says, he probably wants to close…

In addition, Rubin notes that Tim Redding is arbitration eligible and is not a free agent, but wonders if the Mets will non-tender him this winter.

…i don’t see how Redding fits into the Mets plans…he was a disappointment in 2009 and was on the verge of being released mid-season, but was held onto thanks to the injuries in the rotation…

Finally, Rubin takes a look at the catching situation, and feels Rod Barajas is a logical fit to replace Brian Schneider, which would give Josh Thole more seasoning time at Triple-A Buffalo.

…i am not high on Barajas…he hit for decent power in 2009, but below .230…he is 34 and a lifetime .238 hitter…he would clearly be a temporary solution as they watch and hope Thole matures, but in any case, i can’t see him as part of the solution next year…

For more on this and the complete list of free agent’s check out Rubin’s blog.

Note: Redding has Improved, Consistency

by Michael Baron on September 20th, 2009 at 9:05 am

During yesterday’s 3-2 win, Tim Redding lasted into the eighth inning and allowed just one earned run on four hits.

Redding retired the first nine batters of the game, and had faced the minimum through five innings.

Since returning to the starting rotation on August 22, Redding is 2-2 with a 2.73 ERA in six starts.

After the game, Jerry Manuel spoke very highly of Redding, telling reporters:

Tim Redding‘s last two outings have been tremendous…that’s a good sign for us going forward.”

…Redding has definitely been solid over the past month, but his season up until then was a disaster…he had been removed from the rotation and his ERA was well above 6…

…on going forward, i would hope that they would seek more consistency even for a back-of-the-rotation starter such as Redding…

News: Monday’s Starter

by Michael Baron on August 1st, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Prior to tonight’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Monday’s starter will either be Tim Redding or someone from Triple-A.

Manuel would prefer not to have Johan Santana pitch on three days rest to face Diamondbacks’ Dan Haren.

News: Redding Off the Chopping Block

by Matthew Cerrone on July 27th, 2009 at 9:27 am

Adam Rubin of the Daily News believes Tim Redding can stop worrying, as it appears he is ‘off the chopping block.’

Last week, Rubin said the Mets had decided to release Redding by the end of the recently-concluded road trip.

… redding can probably thank the injury to Fernando Nieve, as well as John Maine’s decision to visit Dr. Andrews for a second opinion on his shoulder

Redding has not pitched in a game for the Mets since July 19, when he allowed five runs in three innings in relief.

This season, he is 1–4 with a 7.16 ERA.

Buzz: Redding on Thin Ice, Niese on Deck

by Matthew Cerrone on July 20th, 2009 at 10:01 am

According to the Daily News, the Mets had decided to release Tim Redding by the end of this road trip.

…however, given last night’s injury to Fernando Nieve, it would seem, instead, the Mets will likely keep redding around, since nieve will most certainly soon end up on the disabled list

…it seems most everyone believes Jon Niese will replace nieve in the rotation, while redding will bump to the bullpen

In his last eight starts, Niese is 5-1 with a 0.96 ERA in Triple-A.

…i bet nieve gets put on the disabled list, Nick Evans is capped up to take his place on the roster, while keeping redding on the roster in the bullpen… then, next week, the Mets will promote niese to slot in the rotation, and then decide to either demote evans again and hang on to redding… or, keep evans and cut redding

technically, the Mets could go with just four starters through the end of the month, thanks to an off day next Thursday, but it does not appear they’re going to do that, which is smart… niese has earned a start, and it’s time to see what he can do

Buzz: Lugo to Replace Redding on Roster

by Regis Courtemanche on July 18th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Update, 1:15 pm:

Tim Redding is still in the clubhouse so no move has yet been made.

Original Post:

According to Adam Rubin at the Daily News, Julio Lugo, who was released by the Red Sox yesterday, is already working out for the Mets in the Dominican Republic.

Rubin also believes that this is bad news for Tim Redding, who may likely be released to make room for the 33 year-old shortstop.

In 37 games this season, Lugo is hitting .284, with 16 runs scored and has a .352 on-base percentage.

Redding is 1-3 thus far, and sports a 7.22 ERA.

…if this move happens, this will certainly spell relief for the overworked alex cora…

Buzz: The Starting Pitcher’s Market

by Matthew Cerrone on June 1st, 2009 at 2:29 pm

Tim Redding is 0–2 with a 9.20 ERA in three starts, during which the Mets are 0–3.

Meanwhile, the Mets are 6–3 in Livan Hernandez’s nine starts this season, though five of the six wins were against the Braves, Pirates, Nationals, Marlins and Brewers.

Eventually, the Mets will promote Oliver Perez, who will re-join John Maine, Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana, meaning one of Redding or Hernandez will get bumped from the rotation.

I would think Redding will slot in to the long-relief, spot-starter role, while Hernandez is allowed more time to pitch.

Nevertheless, from what I can gather, the Mets continue to keep an eye around baseball for an ‘experienced, reliable, consistent starting pitcher,’ to be counted on, every five days, for the back of their rotation.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, during the last few weeks, pitchers like Javier Vazquez, Jonathan Sanchez, Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn, Jon Garland, Roy Oswalt, Jason Marquis, Jake Peavy and Brad Penny could all be available, while Pedro Martinez remains unsigned as a free agent.

Sanchez, Peavy, Bedard and Oswalt will require a lot in return; Penny is too much of an injury risk, despite pitching well for the Red Sox; and Garland is having a poor season with the D’Backs.

The two guys from this list, who fit ‘experienced, reliable, consistent, back-of-the-rotation starting pitcher,’ would be Washburn and Marquis, both of whom are free agents at the end of this season, as well as Vazquez, who is under contract through 2010.

I’m not sure the Braves would ever deal a player under contract, in the middle of a pennant race, to the Mets, leaving Washburn and Marquis as players to watch as we get closer to the July 31 trade deadline.

If you remember, according to published reports, the Mets rejected a deal from the Cubs during the Winter Meetings that would have swapped Marquis for Aaron Heilman, who was instead traded to the Mariners for J.J. Putz.

Marquis was eventually traded to the Rockies, who are 13.5 games out of first place today and nine games under .500.

Note: Tim Redding is tonight’s Starting Pitcher

by Matthew Cerrone on May 18th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Tim Redding will make his season debut tonight for the Mets, starting against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

“I’m excited, obviously, to get back here and mix in with the guys and start contributing,” said Redding, according to the Daily News.

“It’s going to be exciting.  It’s going to be a little adrenaline rush… I’m anxious to contribute… These guys are on a roll, and I want to fit back in with my teammates and contribute… I feel like I’m as strong as I could ever possibly be right now.”

Redding began the season on the DL with a strained rotator cuff.

Health: Delgado’s Hip, Castillo’s Back

by Matthew Cerrone on April 28th, 2009 at 7:48 am

Carlos Delgado was forced out of last night’s lineup after experiencing discomfort in his right hip.

Delgado, who will visit a doctor today, told reporters the hip is sore, saying it is typical of pain he has in his hip in the past.

Jerry Manuel told reporters Delgado likely injured the hip while running the bases during a triple on Sunday.

prior to last season, i had two scouts tell me delgado’s hip would eventually act up and give him trouble, be it last season, this season, 10 years from now, whatever, saying it is something he’d probably need surgery on some day… this is not to say now is that time… he’ll probably just miss a game or two here and be fine… the point is, this is always something to keep an eye on, i guess

Luis Castillo left last night’s game in the eighth inning, after experiencing back spasms while running to first base the previous inning.

Jerry Manuel said after the game Castillo will be examined today, “but more than likely Alex Cora will play second base tomorrow.”

…like Gary Cohen said last night, with where castillo’s mind is at, and the way he is playing, he’d have to have his leg cut off to keep him out of the lineup

According to Adam Rubin in the Daily News, Brian Schneider hit in an extended spring training game yesterday, Tim Redding will remain in St. Lucie for his next start, and Angel Pagan is still a month away from being able to play in a game.
