According to Mark Healy of Baseball Digest, the Phillies have already been in contact with free-agent LHP Tom Glavine, who was released by the Braves yesterday.
Last night on Twitter, Newsday’s David Lennon wrote, “The Mets are not considering Glavine, a source just told me.”
Bill Ladson of MLB.com does not believe the Nationals will sign Glavine either, at least not as a pitcher.
In a poll on MetsBlog.com yesterday, 72 percent of 6,700 people said they would not sign Glavine to pitch for the Mets.
Meanwhile, the Rangers put RHP Vicente Padilla on waivers, according to Evan Grant of D Magazine.
Healy believes the Mets had a front office official watch Padilla’s last start against the Yankees, according to an NL East scout.
Padilla is still due $8 million this season, though his contract also has a $12 million team option for next year.
He is 3–3 in nine starts for the Rangers, with just four Quality Starts.
In the off-season, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said the Mets had expressed interest in acquiring Padilla, as did the Dodgers and Braves.

The Braves released LHP Tom Glavine, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, who cites major league sources.
Glavine had surgery on his elbow and shoulder during the offseason.
He pitched six scoreless innings in a rehab start for Single-A Rome on Tuesday, while throwing 64 pitches, 44 of which were strikes.
According to Rosenthal, “Glavine was to be paid $1 million for his first day on the active roster, $1.25 million for 30 days on the roster and another $1.25 million for 90 days on the roster, bringing the total possible value of the deal to $4.5 million.”
“I feel physically good,” Glavine is quoted as saying on MLB.com. “I feel good about the amount of pitches I’ve thrown. I feel like I’m ready.”
… i shutter to say this, but, the Mets need a starting pitcher, and he always had a strong relationship with Omar Minaya and Jeff Wilpon…
…i know his time with the Mets ended badly, but i can’t help but wonder if his name will be dicussed in the offices in Citi Field…

laden, $1 million contract.
Glavine replied that “you have to be mindful what the market is”, and that he didn’t want to become a burden to his team if he became injured.
On Thursday, Jon Heyman of SI.com reported that the Mets may have offered Martinez $1-2 million, plus incentives.
…i think tommy is right-on here, whoever spends $5 million on pedro is way overpaying…if heyman’s report is true, i’m glad the mets didn’t overextend themselves but atleast made a performance-based offer to pedro…

Tom Glavine, writes Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com.
According to Rosenthal, the one-year, $1 million deal, with millions more in incentives, could be finalized today.
Rosenthal believes the deal could include deferred payments, which would help Atlanta acquire a left-handed hitting outfielder, such as Ken Griffey Jr. or Garret Anderson.
In 13 starts for the Braves last season, the 42–year-old Glavine was 2–4 with a 5.54 ERA in 63 innings.

Today’s Marlins starter, Scott Olsen, is one of a trio of Florida starters with road ERAs over 5.00. Mark Hendrickson sports a 6.18 ERA away from Dolphin Stadium, Olsen comes in at 5.66, and Andrew Miller sits at 5.13.
Tom Glavine threw without pain Tuesday, but still doesn’t know if he can avoid surgery.
Dr. Benjamin Shaffer discusses Chad Cordero’s surgery. The pitcher will be in a sling for three weeks then start rehabilitation, with the goal of being ready for spring training in 2009.

Tom Glavine, on news that John Smoltz will miss the rest of the season due to shoulder surgery, as quoted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
“I’m a little mad. I came here to be the No. 3 starter and play a lot of golf and now that’s gone.”
…i wonder if glavine was devastated by this news…
Tagged Tom Glavine |Tom Glavine will face the Mets today, for the first time since leaving for Atlanta via free agency last winter.
He is 1–1 with a 4.41 ERA this season for the Braves.
…glavine will be pitching against John Maine, who was essentially a student of glavine’s last season…hopefully, pitching against his former mentor will not mess with johnny’s head…
For more on Glavine, read the New York Post.
…glavine was terrible against the Braves after joining the Mets…it would be nice if he could return the favor by being terrible against the Mets after re-joining the Braves…
Speaking of Braves pitchers, if John Smoltz is ever able to return from the disabled list, he’ll likely pitch from the bullpen and not the starting rotation, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution describes Tom Glavine’s homecoming to Braves camp.
O’Brien writes:
“I asked if the mood in the clubhouse was like it used to be, when the Braves were always reigning champions who expected to win, or whether he sensed it was more a hunger to get back on top.”
“Glavine said, “Obviously there’s the realization of what’s happened the last two years; that’s fresh on everybody’s minds. Everybody in [the clubhouse] is hungry to get things back on track.”
…it’s as if being on the Mets never really happened…i’m not saying i don’t appreciate glavine’s contributions to the team – i was at his 300th win in chicago and it was amazing – i’m just saying tommy always seems right at home in atlanta, where he belongs…
