Blog: Robinson Speculates on Torrealba

by Mike Nichols on November 21st, 2007 at 2:07 pm

At his blog for MSNBC.com, former Mets broadcaster Ted Robinson takes a look at why the deal between the Mets and free-agent C Yorvit Torrelalba collapsed.

Robinson wonders if the upcoming Mitchell Report on steroids played in to the Mets decision, while noting that Torrealba was a teammate of several players who were called before the BALCO grand jury while playing with the Giants.

Robinson also wonders how the Mets will replace Tom Glavine‘s reliability and says the Mets have some ‘work ahead’ to match the reloaded Braves.

…i enjoyed robinson’s broadcasts when he was with the Mets, even though he was a Fran Healy enabler…

…by the way, if you haven’t checked it out lately, msnbc.com did a beautiful job redesigning their site…

Note: Glavine’s Kids are Mets Fans

by Matthew Cerrone on November 20th, 2007 at 8:58 am

During his conference call with reporters yesterday, Tom Glavine said his two young sons were disappointed he left the Mets, for the Braves, because they have become Mets fans, specifically fans of David Wright and Jose Reyes.

hahahhahahahaha…hi, larious

For more on Glavine’s comments, check out John Delcos in the Journal News.

By the way, as compensation for losing Glavine before December 1, the Mets will receive a first-round pick from the Braves during next year’s draft.

According to a MetsBlog.com poll of more than 3,200 people, 89 percent of those polled would prefer to have Atlanta’s top draft pick, instead of Glavine, even if the Mets are unable to acquire a top-line starting pitcher before opening day.

Listen: Glavine On Braves, Mets

by Regis Courtemanche on November 19th, 2007 at 2:16 pm

During a recent interview with WQXI in Atlanta, Braves LHP Tom Glavine had the following to say about…

…why he declined his option with the Mets…

“I needed to make my mind up on that option within five days of the end of the season, and within five days of the end of the season, I wasn’t really sure I still wanted to play the game, so I knew I had to go through that process – and then, quite honestly, I don’t view myself as a $13–million a year pitcher. I know I could have made that money had I chosen to, but I don’t view myself that way anymore and I’m not going to kid anybody and say that I am.”

…what he feels will be his legacy with the Mets…

“I don’t know, it’s hard to say. Obviously, going there, you wanna win a championship and that didn’t happen. I guess I looked at where the Mets were five years ago and where they are now and it’s a much better organization and it’s a much better team and I’d like to think I had something to do with that…I hope, to some degree, people will look at me as kind of being the first guy who went there and, not totally, but, brought some credibility to what they were trying to do…Hopefully, at the end of the day, people will respect the fact that I went about my business professionally and I handled myself on and off the field.”

Poll: Glavine or Draft Pick

by Matthew Cerrone on November 19th, 2007 at 10:48 am

…for the sake of this poll, assume the Mets do not acquire a top-line starting pitcher via trade, and must settle for signing a player like Livan Hernandez, or Carlos Silva, meaning their opening day rotation could be Pedro Martinez, John Maine, Oliver Perez, Hernandez/Silva and Mike Pelfrey

Buzz: Glavine Could Finalize Deal Today

by Matthew Cerrone on November 18th, 2007 at 9:49 am

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, citing the player’s agent, Tom Glavine could finalize a one-year, $8 million contract with the Braves as early as today.

…i once went out with a girl, who, after we broke up, went back to her ex-boyfriend, with whom she had dated for five years or so before i met her…while together, we had a fun, but awkward relationship, and it never really felt right…this triangle with the Mets, Braves and glavine feels like the same thingi mean, i’m happy for glavine, as a person, but, now i can’t help but feel like he never really wanted to be in new york…

eMailbag: Glavine Draft Pick Compensation

by Mike Nichols on November 17th, 2007 at 11:47 am

MetsBlog-reader Matthew sent in the following email question…

“Hey Matt, would you be able to trace the draft pick that the Mets had to give up to sign Tom Glavine five years ago, and find out who Atlanta took with it?  Also, have the Mets offered arbitration to Glavine and are the Mets assured the Braves pick this year?”

…the Mets signed glavine in Decemeber of 2002, and had to forfeit their second round selection, pick 43, to the Braves, with which they selected LHP Jo-Jo Reyes

According to Baseball America, Reyes, who was 2-2 with a 6.22 ERA in 10 starts for the Braves last season, was ranked as the their eighth best prospect entering 2007.

…as far as the Mets this off-season, the Mets will get a draft pick from atlanta if the Braves and glvaine agree on a deal prior to December 1…if they do not reach a deal by then, the Mets will need to offer glavine salary arbitration prior to December 1 to recieve the Braves first round pick and a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds…if neither occurs, the Mets will not be awarded compensation…

News: Glavine Close to Deal with Braves

by Matthew Cerrone on November 17th, 2007 at 10:12 am

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, free-agent LHP Tom Glavine is close to signing a one-year deal with the Braves.

Glavine declined a $13 million option with the Mets, in what many viewed as the first step in returning to Atlanta to pitch for the Braves and be closer to his family.

Multiple reports suggest that Atlanta’s initial offer is valued at $7 million, which Glavine and his agent countered late last night.

plus, when you consider the $3 million he got from the Mets when they bought out his contract, if glavine’s counter is, say, $8 million or so, he may come out fairly close to the $13 million he declined from the Mets…plus, he returns to his favorite team, gets to pitch with his best friend, John Smoltz, and be with his family…not a bad deal

In the New York Times, Ben Shpigel writes that, ‘out of courtesy,’ Glavine is expected to allow the Mets time to ‘match or exceed’ Atlanta’s final offer.

Glavine’s agent has told reporters that he will make a final decision by the winter meetings, which begin Dec. 3.

umm, tommy, if you really wanna be courteous, could you make that agreement with atlanta before December 1, this way the Mets can snag a first-round draft pick from the Braves…

of course, if he waits, and the Mets offer him arbitration, and he signs with the Braves, they still get a pick, but it’s just much cleaner the other way

Buzz: Braves Make Glavine an Offer

by Brandon Eddy on November 16th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

According to ESPN.com, citing the player’s agent, the Braves made a contract offer to free-agent LHP Tom Glavine.

Glavine’s agent, as quoted by ESPN…

“Now, our intention is to prepare a counter-offer that we will give them by tonight.”

According to the report, the Mets are interested in keeping Glavine and would likely offer more money than the Braves - however, the primary reason he wants to return to Atlanta “is about his family.”

…i am not sure about you, but can this get done already…why is this being so drawn out…we know he wants to be with his family…so just go to your home…

…on a side note, i have not been a fan of glavine since his home opener start in 2003…sorry, but i was severely scarred when the Cubs continuously rounded the bases for an hour straight while i sat among 50,000 or so fans in below freezing temperatures…

…hmmm, there seems to be a coincidence between his first and last start in his Mets career…

Buzz: Braves or Bust for Tom Glavine

by Matthew Cerrone on November 14th, 2007 at 8:15 am

According to Ken Rosenthal at FOXSports.com, the agent for LHP Tom Glavine will meet with Braves GM Frank Wren today in Arizona.

Rosenthal asks…

“The question is whether the Braves will make Glavine a strong enough offer to persuade him to change teams again.”

Rosenthal writes that the Phillies and Nationals are also believed to have interest in Glavine, who became a free agent when he turned down a $13 million, mutual option with the Mets.

rosenthal doesn’t write this, but, i am getting a strong sense that glavine will just retire if he is unable to work out a new deal with the Bravesi believe the Mets would happlily bring him back if he’s interested, but i feel it is Braves or bust at this point
