Earlier today, the Mets officially announced the re-signing of C Ramon Castro to a two-year, $4.6 million contract.
According to multiple reports, the Mets also agreed to a three-year, $14.4 million deal with C Yorvit Torrealba.
…with those both deals reportedly cemented, here is side-by-side comparison of both castro’s and torrealba’s career statistics…

…assuming the Mets catchers split time evenly next season, i wanted to try to predict how each would fare over an 81 game stretch…i took the average stats from Yorvit Torrealba and Ramon Castro over the
last two years, then multiplied them out to see how they would stack up…
Based on his stats over the last two years, if Torrealba plays 81 games next year, he is likely to average eight home runs and 47 RBI, with a .308 OBP while hitting .251.
Over 81 games, Castro will have 14 homers and 38 RBI, with a .327 OBP while hitting .262. Combined, over the course of 162 games, Castro and Torrealba are likely to hit .255, with roughly 20 HR and 85 RBI.
Meanwhile, Paul Lo Duca hit .295, with .333 OBP, while averaging 51 RBI per season over the last two years.
…realistically speaking i see torrealba getting the majority of playing time but it will be interesting to see how it pans out…on another note i will miss lo duca, but am in support of a younger and therefore healthier catcher…
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
…of course, as we know, lo duca is older and was injured on a number of occasions last season, so it’s difficult to project how he will hold up as he gets older, especially over the next three seasons, which is what a team may have to commit to…additionally, while i view it as a positive, it is becoming quite clear that the Mets felt he was a bit of a distraction last season, be it with off-field issues or speaking out publicly against his manager or fighting them on how to rehab from his aches and pains, among other things, all of which cannot be quantified in stats…on the flip side, from a qualitative stand point, i’m sure the Mets will cite torrealba’s hustle, ability to handle a pitching staff, his desire to win and his age…
Tagged Paul Lo Duca, Ramon Castro, Regis Courtemanche, Stats, Yorvit Torrealba |The New York Post, the AP, New York Times, Newsday and the Journal News, among others, all report that the Mets and Yorvit Torrealba
agreed to a three-year, $14.4 million deal yesterday, pairing him up with Ramon Castro, who recently signed a two-year, $4.6 million deal, to be the team’s two-headed catcher.
…for what it’s worth, Newsday was the first to report the $14.4 million number, though i am eager to see exactly how the deal is structured, which nobody has reported on yet…
…by the way, a reader sent me an e-mail last night, and repeatedly called the duo Yormon Torreastro, which is perfect, and which i can’t stop laughing about…hilarious, man…well done…
Talking with reporters last night during David Wright’s Gala in New York City, Willie Randolph said he believes the 36–year-old Lo Duca is seeking at least a three-year deal.
…so, knowing lo duca’s general contract request, and knowing a bit more about torrealba as a person and a player, and knowing that if a top prospect is traded that it’s one less player who can be used in a deal for a pitcher, i’m curious to see how we now collectively vote in the following poll…

“Even though I think the Rockies can upgrade at the position, I’m sad to see Yorvit Torrealba go. I’ll miss the emotion and the passion he brought to every game behind the plate. It really felt like Yorvit was the representative of the die-hard Rox fan on the field…
“Some players seem almost robotic as they go about the 162-game grind. Not Yorvit, especially not during this year’s stretch drive…Sometimes it’s nice to know that the guys we root for care just as much about winning as we do. With Yorvit Torrealba, there was never a doubt. That’s why I’ll miss having him behind the plate.”
…i hate to admit it, especially since this is the opinion of just one fan in colorado, but this write-up from dan, a Rockies fan, has made me far more understanding of this acquisition…
…thanks to fawcette for the link…
Tagged Yorvit Torrealba |As noted earlier, according to ESPN.com, citing the player’s agent, free-agent C Yorvit Torreabla will agree to a three-year contract with the
Mets, which should be officially announced in the next day or so.
…in case you missed it, from yesterday…
…i was able to talk with Troy E. Renck, who does an amazing job covering the Rockies for the Denver Post…
Renck, on Torrealba’s overall game…
“He is a clutch hitter and pitchers like the way he received and called the game…During the season it became obvious that the pitching staff had an unbelievable comfort level with him…The team’s manager, Clint Hurdle, went out of his way on repeated occasions to talk about how he thought what a terrific job Torrealba was doing calling games…
“Torrealba’s main value is that he has passion, he has leadership qualities and he worked wonders with their pitchers. He knew when to give them a pat on the back or a kick in the butt.”
Renck, on Torrealba’s ability to deal with media, since, in New York, the catcher is often asked to address reporters regarding that day’s starting pitcher…
“In the playoffs he loved the attention, he gravitated towards the spotlight. He held court at his locker at several times…Now, how he’ll deal with 10 or 15 reporters, during like what the Mets went through last year, that I don’t know. I mean, he can be a little moody, but, to me, it’s a by-product of his passion…He cares deeply about winning. So, sometimes when he gets upset, it’s not to be a jerk, it’s because he is genuinely upset and he doesn’t want to say the wrong thing, because he cares so much about winning - and I think that’s what his teammates respond so much to.”
By the way, Renck and other writers from the Denver Post will soon release A Magical Season, a book about the 2007 Rockies, who put together one of the most amazing hot streaks in baseball history to reach their first World Series ever.

According to ESPN.com, citing the player’s agent, free-agent C Yorvit Torreabla will agree to a three-year contract with the Mets.
Torrealba’s agent told ESPN Radio in New York that he expects to formalize the agreement with the Mets this afternoon. He declined to reveal how much the contract would pay over the term.
…i am not sure what to make of this torrealba and castro combination…will it be a so-called platoon…and if so, why didn’t the Mets just bring back Paul Lo Duca and give castro more playing time next year…hopefully we will hear from Omar Minaya soon…
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
The Denver Post writes that the Rockies will now turn their attention to ‘other veteran catchers,’ including Paul Lo Duca.
Tagged Ramon Castro, Yorvit Torrealba |According to Adam Rubin in the Daily News, citing ‘an executive from a rival suitor,’ while the Mets are willing to ‘at least guarantee’ three years at $5 million per season for free-agent Yorvit Torrealba, the offer ‘could cover 2011 and possibly have some provision for 2012.’
…oh, my…i mean, i thought three years was excessive…now we’re being told there is a chance it could be a five-year deal, which i assume must be a series of incentives and options…i like torrealba, i do, but to put this in perspective, if he actually does get a five-year deal, that’s two years less than had been given to Mike Piazza, and one year more than Jorge Posada…i mean, it just makes no sense…frankly, at this point, i’m going to reserve judgment of this until it actually becomes official…because, as of now, i’m only reacting emotionally to a media report, not minaya’s actual actions and that’s not fair…but, wow, this is looking very, very odd…
Meanwhile, in Newsday, citing ‘a National League official,’ David Lennon and Ken Davidoff write that Torrealba has been offered a three-year contract from both the Mets and Marlins.
Last night in the Rocky Mountain News, Tracy Ringolsby wrote…
“The interested teams are all pressuring for a decision on their offers by the end of the week.”
According to Ringolsby, Torrealba’s agent said his client will likely make a final decision on Thursday.
…as i wrote last night, at this point, i think the tea leaves are pretty easy to read…he can essentially take $1 million or so more per year to play in the biggest city in the world, with a successful team, but split time with Ramon Castro…or, he can take a bit less money, and either play for the last-place Marlins, or remain in Colorado, and be the every-day catcher…or, if the Mets really want him that badly, they can tack on the rumored and desired third year, if not more, which i really hope they do not do…
…unless, the Mets look at it like, ‘we lock in yorvit long-term, castro is here for just two, if after castro leaves we can sign a new starting catcher, and yorvit can simply slide back to being a back up.’…
By the way, Rubin continues on to explain further details about the negotiations between Castro, the Mets and Torrealba, and how Jorge Posada factored in.
Tagged Ramon Castro, Yorvit Torrealba |According to the Denver Post, free-agent C Yorvit Torrealba is ‘zeroing in’ on a three-year, $15 million offer from the Mets.
…Update…11:10 pm…
However, in the Rocky Mountain News, Tracy Ringolsby reports that, while Torrealba is ‘seeking’ a three-year deal, the Mets have only offered him a two-year deal worth $9 million.
Last week, the News reported that Torrealba had turned down a two-year, $7 million offer from the Rockies.
Today, Ringolsby writes that the Rockies and Marlins have made similar, but less lucrative offers than the Mets, adding…
“The interested teams are all pressuring for a decision on their offers by the end of the week.”
…at this point, i think the tea leaves are pretty easy to read…he can essentially take $1 million or so more per year to play in the biggest city in the world, with a successful team, but split time with Ramon Castro…or, he can take a bit less money, and either play for the last-place Marlins, or remain in Colorado, and be the every-day catcher…or, if the Mets really want him that badly, they can tack on the rumored and desired third year, which i really hope they do not do…
…the question now is, does yorvit really want to play in new york city, or is he, like so many others, just using the Mets to try and pry an extra year or a few more dollars from the Rockies…if this ends up being the case, and torrealba signs elsewhere, where does that leave the Mets…hopefully, it will mean back with Paul Lo Duca, assuming he is still available…
…Update…11:25 pm…
…by the way, i have read all sorts of numbers reported regarding this rumored negotiation, from the three-year, $15 million that i and others mentioned this morning, to two-years, $9 million, to two-years, $10 million…if it is three years guaranteed, i hope he would have signed it, no matter who offered it…therefore, to me, this all suggests that, since he is still unsigned, maybe, the Mets are offering him two years with an option, as incentive, which is just thinking-cap speculation on my part, by the way…
Tagged Yorvit Torrealba |In an article for the New York Times, Ben Shpigel writes that Omar Minaya is willing to trade away some of the organization’s young talent if he could acquire a potential ace in return.
Minaya as quoted by Shpigel:
“There’s no doubt that our premium prospects are very well-liked…We could be players in some of the trades this winter. The way that pitching is in this market, you’re going to have to part with some premium guys.”
…improving the pitching staff has to be omar’s primary focus this offseason, and he will likely have to trade away the likes of Lastings Milledge, Mike Pelfrey and/or Carlos Gomez to do so…however, i hope that omar will not make a trade just to make a trade - and so i don’t see him dealing any of the above names unless it is part of a package deal and for a bona fide ace, which there are few of on the market…
Tagged Omar Minaya, Regis Courtemanche, Yorvit Torrealba |…i’m trying to not think of Paul Lo Duca, who i enjoy cheering for…that being said, i’m growing more and more comfortable with the idea of Yorvit Torrealba potentially splitting time with Ramon Castro, who has also yet to officially re-sign…
…i like that omar is thinking outside of the box, when it comes to a position that is so scarce…from what i can gather, Ramon Hernandez, Gerald Laird and Kelly Shoppach, and even Ronny Paulino, will cost the Mets at least one quality prospect, if not more…whereas torrealba will cost paper…and, frankly, given the talent that could be required in a trade - talent, by the way, that will then be unavailable in a potential deal for a pitcher down the road - is torrealba ultimately that much worse than the alternatives listed above…i no longer think he is…and coupled with castro, the two could conceivably give far better production than lo doca, especially since they will each get ample rest between starts…
…frankly, i prefer lo duca, and i am still holding out hope that he returns, though i do not expect that he will…however, i am starting to understand and buy in to the logic in retaining every possible in-house prospect, and just spending money on torrealba, who, according to my discussion with Troy E. Renck from the Denver Post, sounds to be a hard-working, passionate, win-at-all-costs type of guy…
